Could RFK Jr become the first independent president?

It leaked out that RFK is planning on leaving the democratic party and will run independent. If this happens, it'll be between him, Biden, and Trump, and I know a lot of people who don't want Biden or Trump back (myself included).

A strong run by RFK Jr. will draw votes away from Biden but not from Trump, so it assures Trump a victory. And perhaps this has all been orchestrated in exchange for Trump appointing RFK Jr. to a very desirable position.

Yeah, exactly. Teddy Roosevelt was an Independent, but ran as a Republican. And Trump, Rand Paul and Bernie Sanders were also Independents. Usually Independents either just run as Democrats or Republicans, because they know third party candidates don't stand a chance. Gary Johnson ran as a Libertarian and barely got any votes or media attention.
America is a two party state.
