Thoughts on Canadian House of Commons praising an Ukrainian Nazi?

During a visit of Ukrainian president Vladimir Zelensky, in Canadian House of Commons, speaker of the house, Anthony Rota, of Liberal Party, invited all house to a standing ovation for invited 98 years old Ukrainian war veteran Yaroslav Hunka and called him "a hero". Hunka received two standing ovations from all house members, including prime minister Justin Trudeau and president Zelensky

The case is - Hunka during the war was a Nazi. He was born in then II Republic of Poland, and during World War II he was a member of 14th Waffen SS Grenadier Division of Nazi Germany, and was implicated into killing Polish and Jewish civilians in Massacre of Huta Pieniacka. After the war ended he fled first to Great Britain and later to Canada.

The news is a few days old, but I believe most people outside of Canada have not heard about it, so I post it.

So here is what I understand about this whole situation:

Imagine being born under the horrors of the Holodomor. The Germans come to drive the Soviets so you decide to join them to fight the people who were opressing you, likely unaware of their own horrors they commit.

You end up losing the war overall but the Nuremberg trials supposedly found you innocent of the war crimes the people you joined, otherwise the you probably would have died in prison long ago.

After realizing your opressors will be back in control of your homeland, you flee to Canada where you lived peacefully for 75 years.

Eventually, you were dragged into the Canadian Parliament and all 338 of these idiots applaud you. Having no idea what is happening because you are 98 and likely have a lot of memory issues, the band of idiots where we're just applauding you suddenly realized they hate you and demand you to be shipped to Poland to face war crimes you were never declared guilty of.

If I have any of that correct. I cannot say I am surprised that the Canadian government is being the Canadian government.

The nazis tried to fight the Soviets in Hitler's conquest, in fact I believe the USSR was his first target. The effort failed miserably once they actually arrived in the Soviet Union but they actually tried to fight them.

Even so, I think sending this dude back is such a waste of resources. He's 98, he probably kicked the bucket 5 hours ago for all we know. We failed to properly judge him in life and now he must face the consequences in death.

War crimes actually do not expire. He could still be put to trial today.

The idea of a parliamentary system of goverment depends upon having a largely homogeneous country that can consent to be consistently run by a minority with absolute power.

that may have been the case of loyalist Canada for much of her history but it is increasingly not the case as Canada gets ever larger and more diverse. Her minority dictatorship will become ever more repressive.
