To be on the safe side, from before 11:00 am to after 2:00 pm PST, my wife and I plan to unplug everything in our house that can send or receive wi-fi. We're going to put our phones, laptops and tablets in the unplugged microwave, which is like a Faraday cage.

There are rumors that the emergency alert may be broadcasting a broad range of very unhealthy EMP signals.

We don't want to take chances.

I saw a lot of posts saying to turn off your phone.. if the purpose is to test if it works, why in the world would people be suggesting to turn it off.

it would only apply to say people putting a baby to sleep or some other thing in that sense that would interrupt crucial time of silence.

It's just an emergency alert notification. It doesn't mean you can't use your phone. You'll get the notification, it will scare the shit out of you, then you just close the notification and carry on with your day.
