If you consider someone with KNOWN mental health issues - and 2 weeks in a psych hospital - can own & use an AK-15 should gun laws in USA be stricter?

This coward, and there are no other words to describe this sniveling spineless ball-less yellow bellied dog, opened fire in a CHILD'S bowling alley killing at least 22 & wounding 60.

He has mental health issues - spent TIME in a psych hospital - and yet instead of pulling his weapons including UNNECESSARY weapons such as an AK15 (people who think any civilian having such any high-power / dangerous guns is acceptable are simply trash) nothing's done and this is the result.

Here is a link that says what the laws are by state regarding mental illness and owning and gun. I couldn't find anything about federal legislation but from what I can tell firearm laws vary by state.

It looks like Maine only prohibits firearm ownership for the following:

"A person may not own, possess, or have under that person’s control a firearm, unless that person has obtained a permit under this section, if that person:

Has been found not criminally responsible by reason of insanity of committing certain enumerated crimes."

Oh I guess there is a federal law too, here is that link as well. Any person who has been "adjudicated as a mental defective" or "committed to a mental institution" is prohibited under Federal law from shipping, transporting, receiving, or possessing any firearm or ammunition. Violation of this Federal offense is punishable by a fine of $250,000 and/or imprisonment of up to ten years."
However, when you open the download and read further, commitment refers to involuntary commitment so if this particular person was voluntarily committed it looks as though it would not have shown up in the background check according to state of federal law. Also, without a red flag law I don't think there is a anyway to take guns away from once these rules might apply. I could be wrong on that though, I'm not an expert on gun laws.

Yes for sure especially if his mental health issues are known. Another detail is confusing to me though why was he allowed to leave the psych hospital after two weeks. Coming a psychiatrist background I know that many mental health issues are taking 4 to 6 weeks to recover from.

@Lionman95 Yeah I wondered that two about the two weeks thing. I don't work specifically in mental health but I work on a med/surg floor at a hospital and we will sometimes have psych patients on involuntary holds until a bed is available in a psych facility. The only thing I could think of is whether his commitment was voluntary and if he left on his own.

We have had nuts drive a truck into a parade, somebody make a couple of bombs out of pressure cookers, somebody who poisoned Tylenol capsules and other means to kill people. Guns are always to blame because the left needs to disarm us.

If we were in the 1600s we'd blame cannons. If the 1000-1300s it'd be arrows & spears.

When you compare the death ratio caused by guns versus every other weapon... guns outweigh the others by 5 or 10 to 1. Not blaming guns - well the shitty laws, poor regulations and as examplified here the screwups that let nutcases get guns - is just ignorance & stupidity.

What when in other countries with high gun numbers there's nowhere near the death rate but in other countries you gotta be damn certain you wanto to shoot someone else. USA you can run out in the street shooting and the cops are unlikely to come unless you shoot someone or something

I felt like I had to have guns for protection. The police cannot be everywhere and there have been breaking in the neighborhood. Recently there have been hundreds of illegals put up in hotels less than 5 miles from my house. The state I live in is getting ready to pass a bill where it will be next to impossible to get a license for concealed carry. I felt like I need to do this while I still can.
