There are definitely some scholarships out there for middle class families, not just for poor folks. A lot of times the really big scholarships get more publicity, but you gotta do some digging to find the other options. Here are a few ideas:
- Check with your guidance counselor. They often know about local scholarships that aren't super selective or get a ton of apps. Could be stuff from civic groups, employers, etc.
- Look at career-specific awards. If you plan to go into a field like teaching, nursing, engineering, there may be scholarships from professional associations.
- Sites like Fastweb, Scholarships. com have tons of listings, not just the big national awards. Filter for things with lower applicant numbers.
- Look at your parents' employers - many large companies offer scholarships to employees' kids.
- Colleges themselves sometimes have merit awards for GPAs or activities even if you don't get the big academic scholarship.
- Check if your parents' alumni associations offer anything. Older relatives' schools too.
- Local libraries, stores, rotaries - pretty much anywhere may offer a small scholarship if you ask around.
The money may not be huge, but every little bit helps. You just gotta be willing to dig a little deeper than just the obvious big name awards. Keep your hopes up - something is out there!
