Not gung ho about this proposal. I was a scholarship recipient myself by the way (academic merit) when I got my undergrad. Not a full ride but definitely a good chunk of change.
However both republicans and democrats are ducking the bigger question: why the hell is college tuition so outrageously expensive to begin with?
Right or wrong people often confront virtually every other institution when it comes to price gouging. Whether it’s fuel costs, healthcare, groceries, etc. If you pay for other goods or services people will at least question (if not outright protest) if the cause is assumed to be about greed.
But again I seriously ask why aren’t people confronting higher education institutions themselves about their exorbitant tuition costs? Why?
I actually have a theory on why but I rather hear from someone else first about above.
I don't know the details of what they are considering. When someone says "Republicans are considering", it doesn't mean shit. That's extremely vague.
Scholarships are not the same as grants and loans. Only a fraction of students receive any type of scholarship. And very few scholarships would put someone in a taxable bracket. It seems to me like this is targeting big sports scholarships more than anything else.
And if it just happens to cause less people to go to college, then good. There are way too many people going and we need to cut back. It's already a problem, yet academia continues it's mantra "College is the cure for everything". That has never been true, and it is even less true today than it was in the past.
College scholarships, typically used for tuition and related educational expenses, are usually not considered taxable income. This helps make education more affordable for students.
Pros of making scholarships taxable might include increased tax revenue for educational funding and equal treatment among financial aid types. However, cons include potentially deterring students from further studies due to the increased financial burden and reducing the overall financial benefit of receiving a scholarship. Balancing educational support with tax policies is crucial for maintaining accessible education.

No, college is expensive enough. Leave it alone.
Lol why not cancel all scholarships instead. No they are going to make all those college students that make good money with their degrees pay back their student loans.
"Free" doesn't mean there is no cost. It simply means that the government taxes everyone else to pay for your education. Why should I pay for someone else getting a M. F. A. in Art History?
I honestly don't know what the hell that is. However, I study for free.
No. I can pay for someone else's education or medical expenses and it is not, nor should it be, taxable.
No. They tax way to many things as us. Perhaos DJT will remedy this.
