If you believe in free college education, would you support this system?

Many say they want college to be free, which to me would be terrible. It would either have to make the schools state run to keep prices down or it would make the current problem of high costs right now worse.

Supply and demand issues when suddenly everyone can attend.

The idea I heard a few years back though, could be that there is a federal income tax (USA idea) similar to the FICA for social security. Those that want free education agree to pay this tax the rest of their lives. Those that do not, never have to. It is a opt in tax, those that opt in get to attend college free.

We have the technology and means to track what people currently owe by various deductions and others, seems like this could be a win win situation. If you support it, you can support it with your tax dollars the rest of your life. If you do not support it, you never have to but you can never use it.

In order to work, the tax rate would need to be adjusted as needed to ensure the college education fund always has money and it can never go in the red or use general funds.

In theory this method could be used for any type of social program, those that support it can pay for it, those that don't support it, do not have the extra tax but cannot use it.

If a program is popular enough wouldn't most people sign up for it?

Nothing if ever free someone has to pay for it.

Why not those who want it and used it?

I just heard someone talk about this the other day. more or less what the person said was if your a C and below student that just didn't care about there grades and just did what ever then hell no there loans shouldn't be foregiven but if you worked your ass off and did everything that your suppose to then yea help them. How i look at it is its YOUR CHOICE to go to college. instead of free college for 1 stop raising the damn cost up so much every yr.2 get rid of all the filler classes and all the classes that you can't get a job in.3 start promoting trade schools more. the idea of lets add a separate tax for the ones that want free college really lets give the government another way to fuck up with people's money. they really done a great job with the SS money

When you give something to a person and they don't pay, it has no value to them. Your plan is socialism. And people will also study thing that will not produce a career. Public school education, that is paid for with taxes, should include courses that teach people how wealth is created and also teach civics so people understand government. Also, every parent should teach their kids that life is not fair and nothing is free when they are young. Just wait for the first time you kid tells you that something is not fair and explain it.

Free university education has nothing to do with socialism. 99% of Germany's universities are free and we are the wealthiest country in Europe. Obviously our universities produce capable people.

@DryGermanGuy Free university education is taking other peoples money to give another person something that is free to them but comes from other peoples wealth creation. The money to give away does not come from the rear end of a unicorn. If it is not socialism, it is certainly not Capitalism. I know that people in Europe sit in self righteousness and a sense of self superiority and look at the rest of the world as uncivilized. How do these intellectual superior people seem to be fighting wars over the last 120 years that ravage and devastate the entire continent? Yet you folks rely on the United States to provide money and security. Let me say this, I do not hold anyone alive today for past wars.

European government rely on the nanny state mentality of their people to govern and control. That is socialism. It might seem like freedom, but it is not. I don't blame you for not knowing. It is your educational system that has programed you. Europeans are good at many things. Languages is one. I do not have a language oriented mind, I do better with numbers. But but when we all finish in the toilet, the crap smells as bad and as any other human. I met a German that visited the US in the late 1980's. He had a good job with 5 weeks vacation. He started small after the fall of the USSR and started a business in Poland. He always admired firearms but wasn't able to collect firearms. He could not do that in Germany. He moved to Poland became, a millionaire and manages a business, and followed his passion. He was a proud German that admitted that he could not have achieved his success in Germany.

We have several options outside of collage that are ready to be use. But people don't use them. So I think people need to do research and be more willing to use them. I went to Job Corps for 3 years. I didn't pay a cent for it and got paid when I graduated. I left after completing the entire Cisco Networking program and doing enough building maintenance that I have been able to run new pluming in a entire house. Stop being obsessed with collage.

Well it' would not free, taxpayers would pay for it.
I could go along with it bring free if they made the academic requirements needed to get in higher. Meaning only the best would get to go to college. Currently anyone can go to college if they've got the money or are willing to take on a mountain of future debt, which is why we have do many college graduates in this country who barely got their degree or dropped out now working in the fast food industry.

I think that terms of student loans need to be tightened. There should be limits on how much students can borrow, This will help make tuition more affordable. The cost of tuition has risen much greater than the rate of inflation.
