Should the federal government be funding private colleges and universities?

The Trump administration has just brought this to the attention of the American people. Hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars are given to private colleges and universities. Columbia gets 400 million a year. Many other colleges get even more. There was even a college in Australia that was given millions.

Colleges have huge endowments and they do not pay taxes. Why should they get money from the federal government? I would cut all of it.

This has been an issue for a long time. We did this one in our mock government class in high school. I feel the same now as I did then. They should fund the students, and I don't care whether it's used for private or public schools.

I don't know how much, if any, funding they give to private universities just to fund the university. They give grants, like the Pell Grant, to students. As far as I know they can use it anywhere.

The government also funds tons of research, especially to the big research universities. I don't see why it should matter if they are public or private. It's the research that is being funded. Most of those private universities happen to be research universities. So yea, they get funding like any other research university.

There is a tremendous amount of research done in the US, and a large part of it is funded by the government.

You might want to ask yourself why they are funding private universities. I think it's for research. Primarily. That research benefits the United States in general and it even benefits common people who aren't billionaires. That probably doesn't sit too well with you, but it does with the rest of us.

No!! Going to college is a choice. I don't even know why the government is sticking their big nose in this.
College debt has to be paid by the person that decided to go to college. My brother did and it costs him $75,000 and the government didn't pay for him to go to college. He had to pay for it himself.
That's the way it's always been. And in the olden days your parents worked and saved money for their child to be able to go to college.
The government is doing everything imaginable to save money so they shouldn't be paying out any money if a person chooses to go to college. The student should have to pay for it. Period.

Sometimes the government does things just because they incentive what is better for the population.

Yes, I worked at a private college and they have way too many administrators. I teach at a state school now and they have way too many administrators as well. A lot of money is spent for feel good programs that have nothing to do with educstion.
