Colors does not exist. Our perception of colors is a byproduct of how our eyes registers light and how our brains process the information which means that if we for example meet aliens then our culture of colors and fashion would probably not make any sense to anyone else.

@Daniela1982 That is possible but what I am saying is very different. What we think of colors is just different wavelengths of light. All the colors are on the same scale and are just different lengths. The reason why we see them as "colors" is because human eyes uses 3 different sensory cells that each react to a certain range of wavelengths. We usually call them S, M, and L for short, medium and long.

In other words, we are not measuring the actual wavelengths of light with our eyes but rather how strongly the different sensors are reacting which creates a whole bunch of chaos. For example, we can "see" colors that does not actually exist simply because we can stimulate the cells in our eyes in weird ways.

For example, you can have many types of wavelengths at the same time which would make our brain "mix" together for example red and blue to create purple which is impossible strictly speaking. Purple as a color does not exist on the visible spectrum of wavelengths. After all, if you actually mix blue and red together you get green instead which is actually in the middle of the two wavelengths.

Basically, to make this whole story very short, our perception of wavelengths is serviceable for what we use it for but is otherwise completely fucked from an objective standpoint. What we see does nor represent what is actually there and would only make sense to others who have the same messed up sensor cells in their eyes as we do.

So maybe with "red shift", the only color someone going at the speed of light sees is red?

@Daniela1982 Red shift is different. It happens when you move away from a source of light. If you move towards it then it would shift towards blue. But again, colors are just made up regardless. In the real world there are only wavelengths of light and in some ways that is much simpler to understand since its linear and goes from zero to infinity rather than out concept of colors which requires at least 3 different numbers to express it like RGB.

I'm sure if you were going at the speed of light you would see nothing as the light would enter your eyes at such a fast pace that your brain could not process what it was seeing fast enough.

@Daniela1982 That is not true, the speed of light is always the same. If you were going "at the speed of light" then the light would still be going at the speed of light for you. It is weird like that. Granted, what you would be seeing would still not make any sense but that is not because the light would go at a different speed because that is physically impossible in our universe.

Yes, but the speed of light coming towards you and you towards it would make quite a difference.
