What level are we at AI in real life for now?

At present we use Large Language Models which are built up to use Machine Learning, this is a subset of what most would call AI. ML is also termed deep learning and makes use of Neural Networks (LLMs built on them). With machine learning they can upto a point self learn. An example would be with monitoring events that happen with say robotic tools, if the following happens we know there is a 90% chance of failure, so when the following things occur, automatically replace the tooling with new. This then gets refined and refined.
One of the concerns is using LLM/ML in critical areas such as military, where you could have it monitoring events and then taking action based on probability of those events and the outcome of each. While we have the likes of ChatGPT that you can have do some pretty amazing things, there are malicious version with all the moral rules removed. Also LLMs are being used to create and spread fake news including images to support that news.

Its mostly a novelty programmed by people. AI will become self-aware and that is when controls must be added. Like Skynet in the Terminator series.

It's just programs which emulate intelligent replies according to predefined parameters, it's not real intelligence.
In matter of real neural networks our technology is on insect brain level.
