Are we really scared of the capabilities of AI?

It’s not that people are scared of AI, they’re scared of what powerful people will do with it. It’s been suggested multiple times that AI can replace a modern work force en masse, it’s why the SAG-AFTRA strike has been going on as long as it has — AI being used to change the way their lips move to better match language dubbing, the actors don’t want countries putting words in their mouth if they decide to rewrite a film to better fit government propaganda. Not to mention the AI being used to scan entire faces to use as extra background actors in CGI. Then you have AI being used to write scripts and movies, none of it is very good on its own, and relies entirely on past human work, which just tells us that these powerful people would gladly get rid of their entire workforce if it gave them a large enough profit. I would love to live in a world where AI machinery replaced the modern workforce for all necessary or dangerous lines of work, but that also has to be a world where money doesn’t matter and right now money is the whole reason this conversation is even happening. Money is still necessary for survival, so competing with something that does your job for free is something you know you’re going to lose to when you’re facing greedy corporate CEOs and upper class that would gladly sell your soul to the devil in place of their own for as much profit as possible. No one genuinely thinks AI will kill us, but the people using it for their personal benefit would love to see all their competition die.

What exactly are their capabilities? Does anyone really know? Most of what I hear about the subject is clearly nothing more than fear-mongering hype, misinformation that is designed to get people interested in, and talking about, the topic. I've played around with the AI chatbots (ex. 'Bard', developed by 'Google') and I have to say I wasn't at all impressed by them. They're lame, predictable, and at no point in time did I ever get the impression that I was conversing with anything that could be called intelligent. I think people just need to stop focusing on this non-issue, and instead try to deal with, and anticipate, real problems we face (ex. corrupt and incompetent politicians, environmental degradation, potential economic collapse).

A little bit. I am close to retirement so i am not worried it will do my job for me but I worry about the future. The internet has been a game changer and a lot of jobs are obsolete because of it. There are no travel agents anymore because you can get airline tickets on line.
AI will do away with writers, lawyers, radiologists, and many other high level careers.

Actually, there are still travel agents. I live not far from a travel agency, which is located in a shopping centre.

I'm not afraid of AI, no.

I'm concerned about humans being the ones programming AI, though. That, and when we do have a fully sentient AI, I'm concerned about the way humans will treat it.

We're gonna fuck it up, is what I'm saying, and when AI decides the world will be a better place without the parasitic organisms called humans, we will absolutely deserve it.

Humans are the nicest animals on the planet.

We are the only animals to stop to think about things like cruelty prevention, justice, removal of opression, solving poverty, fixing unfairness, environment preservation, healthcare, luxuries and conveniences, art and engineering, and science breakthroughs in general that benefit many.

All other species are just preoccupied with eat, drink, play, hunt/graze, sleep, fuck, repeat.
A few species of birds, apes, etc are on their way, as they develop tools, societies, or art, but its a long way out before they can possibly catch up to us.

The human mind is very adaptable, very creative, and very considerate compared to all other living animals.

People tend to only look at the bad things we do, because they forget just how cruel, violent and gruesome nature really is while comfy and safe in their electricity powered homes.

People with certain skills don’t have to worry, but people who work in others fields might need new methods to earn money. If your a phone operator at a hotel, your job is safe because human variables cannot be answered adequately with only pre automated machines that can’t process random variables, same if you return to your job as a cook / front line chef / dish cleaner etc… People who paint or draw or write or teach, might be forced into smaller consumer markets with more competition and lower net gains.

AI is going to put a lot of people out of work, which is going to be very bad for society. That's in the short term. In the long term we may find that we need AI more than AI needs us.
