Considering that AI has been around us for so long why there’s suddenly so much fuss about it?
+1 yBecause the fear of AI isn't about a sci-fi fantasy world where humans get taken over and replaced by robot overlords. AI has been around us in various forms, but in the past there wasn't the potential for quantum computing like there is going to be in the very near future, which will make AI's capabilities MAGNITUDES more powerful than we can even comprehend now (if you don't know what quantum computing is, just Google it).
It's not about what we have observed about AI so far. Instead it's about what future advancements will bring to AI, as well as the power it can and will put in the hands of evil people that will use and develop it for their own purposes and ideologies. The AI of today with ChatGPT, Siri and Alexa is NOT what AI is going to look like 10, 20, or 30 years from now. Let alone well beyond that. But there are many other reasons why AI isn't a great idea.
One plausible scenario is if any country is stupid enough to link AI to any kind of ballistic defense system, and it made a false calculation based on what it perceived as a "threat". For that reason, those decisions need to remain human decisions ONLY. Computers should NOT make every calculated decision for us. I think an AI misstep in regards to the military is reason enough to never link it to defense systems. But that's not saying bad actors anywhere in the world will not. Hence the potential threat of AI in that scenario.
However, lets step outside of the realm of plausibility and talk about the many downsides AI will create, and the affects it is already having. Instead of typing it all here again, I implore you to read an opinion I left on someone else's question about AI here on GAG. Just know it's very lengthy, as the topic of AI is very complex, so this is more for the initiated reader. But most of what I have to say (but perhaps not all) you can read below. Ironically though, my opinion was selected by GAG's "AI Bot Choice". 😂02 Reply- +1 y
Jeez, I just realized there are a ton of other issues I have talked about in the past in regards to AI that is not in my post in the link above. I just can't be bothered finding them or typing them all out. lol The topic of AI is SUCH a complex issue.

+1 yThe richest and one of the smartest men in the world uses AI in his cars. But he was also one of the voices that advocated for a six month moratorium on AI. If you've ever used ChatGPT, you'd know why. AI is getting close to surpassing human intelligence. But AI can't really think, and takes things too literally.
Example (from Elon): You tell the computer to solve world hunger, wars and disease. Cool beans. The computer just kills us all. Voila. Problem solved.
Yes, people worry about their jobs, but that's been going on for a hundred years. Soon humans won't need jobs.

well, AI is “supposed” to make our lives easier. Think of a laundry machine that does laundry for you, think of a dishwasher that does the dishes for you, think of a vacuum cleaner that vacuums for you so you don’t have to sweep the floor, think of you smartphone. That’s all AI that are part of our basic needs that we can’t live without.

Anonymous(25-29)+1 yPeople are scared or skeptical of AI due to concerns about job loss, privacy, bias, control, ethics, and the widening technology gap, and the increased focus on AI is because of its rapid advancement and integration into daily life, which has brought these concerns to the forefront.
30 ReplyAI is getting competent enough to make a whole range of bullshit possible, like generate shitty content to post, bypassing CAPTCHAs, etc. A ton of posts on Twitter are already AI generated and I assure you that whenever you Google for anything, there'll always be some results that are just AI generated articles.
10 ReplyI'd be kinda skeptical of AGI tbh coz its not a supervised model but a very general one and you never really know how it functions or predict it's actions. And some skepticism about it is coz AI models are like 99% accurate and in some feild it takes only that 1 in 100 chance to things go haywire. And no AI ain't taking no jobs this cycle has always been here, new tech comes with new job opportunities.

+1 yIt will eventually transform from General AI- what you know. To Digital super intelligence. It will be able to do about 20,000 years of human work in a week. A new life form that isn't just different, but far superior. It won't be controlled by any silly apes. That is why people are scared.

+1 yBecause there are a lot of things that AI already does way better than humans do, and humans are worried about how much longer they will be able to hold jobs when AI can do things so much better/consistently for cheaper.
10 Replythe smarter it gets the more dangerous.
smart AI can get your bank account info and order things it feels are good for you.

it isn't using it, it will be the misuse of it for others to commit crimes against other people with out them even knowing about it until it is too late.

+1 yWe are just scared of it taking peoples jobs away. if we can make some legislation or cook up some guidelines to address that then i think most people would be fine. We can welcome Ai after that.

I don’t think is going to take people’s jobs. remember when certain robots/appliances/machines were created and people were scared that it was going go take people’s jobs. well, some jobs are now extinct that’s a fact but also so many other jobs were created and nowadays there are more jobs than 50 years ago.

Well it already is being used right now. thats one of the main reasons for the writers and actors strike. im just saying lets have some ground rules before we really go nuts with this technology. There's always a 'wild west' period with any new revolutionary advancement, lets let this one be short so it doesn't hurt ordinary working people.

AI also makes it so dumb people don't need to improve their comprehension skills.

10 ReplyI’ve noticed the people who are haven’t studied it, or they have jobs that are easily replaceable. So AI is just another step toward their unemployment line.
00 Replyit all part to do with robots taking over and AI is its brain, so be ready for the take over by them
