A witch-hunt is an attempt to find and punish a particular group of people who are being blamed for something, often simply because of their opinions and not because they have actually done anything wrong.

I believe the term originated from the Salem witch trials, where women who were perceived as outspoken or who otherwise challenged the social norms of colonial times; were accused of being possessed by the devil and were hanged or drowned for being “evil”

today the term applies to a situation where someone goes looking for something to justify their world view
