Is College a Hostile Educational Environment for Men?

Males are keenly aware that when they go to college they are entering a hostile environment. Freshman orientation alone has had a distinctively anti-male cast for years: heavy emphasis on date rape, stalking, unwanted sexual attention, and sexual harassment amount to an unmistakable message that males are patriarchal oppressors and potential sex criminals. The lesson is quickly taught: only women are vulnerable, and men are the cause of their vulnerability. At one elite university, at least, the first thing a female freshman gets from the administration is a whistle to blow in the event that a rape-minded male accosts her. The freshman male is likely to acquire a new feeling about himself: he is the designated potential perpetrator until proven innocent.

This message will be reinforced by a barrage of gender courses, the attitudes of a good many faculty, and on many campuses, what Charlotte Allen calls “the scorched-earth war against fraternities.” The anti-fraternity movement is ostensibly about wantonness and excess (binge-drinking, hazing, date rape), but in reality it’s about erasing the best-known male refuge from the suffocating political correctness on campus and its theory of the evil male.

College is hostile to males in some ways, but the reason for the gender imbalance is more related to admissions policies and the fact that the vast majority of gender-based scholarships and financial aid opportunities are for females, despite the overwhelming imbalance it has caused. That needs to change, obviously, but unfortunately the pendulum is still swinging in the other direction and will take a long time before the feminist bias can be overridden.

The other major factor here is the public lower education (grade school through high school) environment, which is even more hostile toward boys. Public schools have become extremely gynocentric. The curricula and schedule are tailored to girls, not boys, and any boy that doesn't behave like the typical mild-mannered girl is branded a "behavioral problem" from a very young age. That's a psychological condition that many boys never overcome, and those boys are far less likely to choose to continue their schooling after high school.

The biggest challenge we need to overcome before these problems will ever be taken seriously is the perception that being pro-male is somehow anti-female, and perception feminism has worked very hard to perpetuate.

Maybe that is another attraction of hard degrees such as engineering for guys. Fewer women, less risk.

On the darker side, higher education is fraught with dangers like experimentation, sexism, racism and political views, whether left or right. Faculty and staff nurture, foster and foment discord.

On the positive side, higher learning is a hotbed of invention, discovery and social changes.

Most people leave all that behind once they leave school. For example, in my day I was a revolutionary, and I was rewarded for it! Today, people would not reconcile my revolutionary roots with my present self!

I went to college a long time ago. Nobody had to be told that they shouldn't put roofies in a girls drink and rape her afterwards. I guess kids were raised with morals back then.

The only hostile environment was the classroom during exam week.

Amount of pointless study subjects increased significantly since 1970 ties either. There are subjects completely dominated by boys and those are subjects which guaranty a good paid job. While my hair dresser has a psychology bachelor, she cuts and dyes hair because she makes more that way.
It's not different at medicine unis. General medicine is dominated by women, I guess 70-80% are girls. However if it goes about medical specialization there are mostly men.

If we apply the logic progressives use for people other than straight white males then yes. There could be a multitude of reason for something like this, however we have evidence to say that women are definitely more encouraged to go due to the presence of female only scholarships, clubs and sports (though that is getting destroyed for the dumbest reason possible).

Hostile environment? Maybe, I haven't personally seen it when I went but that is just my experience. I did have to take some sort of online anti-harassment class which was dumb as hell so maybe that was what people were talking about.

I have heard that there is a general bias for professors to give women better grades than men and once the lockdowns hit that bias went away because it got replaced by a grading algorithm. Don't know how prevalent that is though.

The big drop for males is among straight white males, who are always maligned by far-left types that dominate most universities, so it's likely that it's perceived that way by them. I don't think that males of other races, especially Asian males feel the same way.

Asians do care when they are discriminated against. In November 2014, an organization created by anti-race conscious admissions activist Edward Blum calling itself Students for Fair Admissions (SFFA) sued Harvard, alleging that the University discriminates against Asian-Americans.

That's discrimination in admissions- their enrollments haven't declined because they still see a university education as beneficial, whereas many white males no longer do.

That is true. However, college men of all races can be at risk if a woman make a false claim but likely the risk is greater if the student is white.

I'm not aware of whether the risk is greater for white males, but I am under the impression that the general animus leftists have against straight white males was what was turning them off in these leftist-dominated institutions. This is not an issue for Asians.

This has basically been the goal of intersectional feminism for a long time. Inequality is fine, as long as the person being treated poorly is of less diversity than the one being treated with preferential treatment.

Not at all, I loved going to college; We had fun group projects, ate pizza together, went places together and I made a ton of friends while learning about my passion.
College simply isn't required for many professions that men frequent. Welding, wood working, plumbing: All of these have good earnings and job security while not requiring college.

When I went to college my experience was fine and I didn't feel my gender was being attacked.

Anyways, many guys today are just seeming themselves as the victims or like to play the victims.

Keep your hands to yourself and mind your business while you're in college getting your education and no one will bother you or accuse of sexual harassment or rape.
