Is there ever a good reason to silence the opposition? What if the opposition was purposely spreading lies?

We’re in a weird spot because ordinarily I’d be for a free and open exchange of ideas, but things have gotten so wacky, at a time when we have the internet. The social media aspect is the big worry for me. Humans are not smart enough to be exchanging absolutely ridiculous ideas in this kind of volume, where that sheer volume begins to lend credibility to ridiculous idea. “Well, everyone is saying X, so it MUST be true!”

Then the next thing you know, there are conspiracy videos on YouTube by “independent journalists”, just here to bring you the real facts everyone else is scared to tell, and pay no mind to the fact every single one of these eventually winds around to “So, in summary, vote MAGA Republican.” 🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️🤦‍♂️

I think we’re in a very dangerous time where misinformation and disinformation can be spread with such ease and in so little time, and we can’t just default to our past attitudes, because there’s been a whole paradigm shift. This requires adjustment.

I don’t what the exact adjustment should be, but you have guys like Steve Bannon out here literally suggesting the right wing “flood the zone with shit” with all the stolen election stuff, to deliberately confuse the issue and sow doubt in the minds of the followers. That’s absolutely fucking crazy, and it can be done in minutes just with a tweet from the right person. That HAS TO BE managed somehow, because the problem is most people don’t have the intelligence to properly discern valid information from invalid information. Simply put: humans aren’t smart enough to be left to their own devices in this.

The big problem is a lot of people just have this unshakable “federal government bad” mentality, so any enforcement that would probably necessarily come through federal agencies is going to be instantaneously mischaracterized as some Orwellian dystopian overreach. And some idiots out there will take up arms in the name of “yOu’Re NoT tHe BoSs oF mE!”, so things might go real fucking haywire.

Nope, if God didn't silence the Devil, he let Adam and Eve decide what they were gonna do.. It's our natural human right to free speech, and no man has the right to take it away.. No matter how much I might dislike what somebody says, it's their right to say it.. As long as it's not violent or threats.

I think that you can voice a violent belief without it being a threat or call to violence. For example:

Belief: Paul should be murdered
Threat: I am going to kill Paul
Call to violence: We need to go kill Paul.

While murdering Paul is clearly a reprehensible belief. As long as you state it in the first example. You should be able to state it freely. It is when you go to the second and third example where you should be censored.
