Why do some bosses think they have to demean, mock and threaten employees when they could make them feel respected and emphasize their qualities?

I think employees are more engaged and productive if they are respected by their bosses.

I did. My boss started being even more demeaning after the talk we had in his office. I tried to co-opt my colleagues. They all said they had had worse bosses before, that they get enough money and are satisfied, and that I should manage conflict better. When I had my resignation on the table, they said I didn't care about the team and that someone's workload would increase because of me and that I should not show them the resignation paper before showing the boss (the boss was still asleep when I went to the office).

If they cared about the team then they wouldn’t have created a hostile work environment.
