The truth is simple: Trump told his cronies he didn't want it, and not to even give the appearance of any sort of win for Biden, or any bi-partisan effort, so he could campaign on that.
This bill was created in equal parts by Repubs and Dems, and like most bills in Congress, it's loaded with bullshit. Aid to Ukraine would not pass on its own, though it should, while aid to Israel would since Congress is bought off, and it shouldn't. Taiwan is like "yeah, I'll have fries with that". Both sides knew this, so it got tossed in together.
That said, stop making up lies and "maga-splaining" things. Let me show you just a little bit of "spin and disinformation" works. Here's what a Trumper claimed the bill says: " ...(it) REQUIRES the government to admit 5,000 illegals a day before they can do anything" ...
Here's what the bill really says:
"The bill would force the Department of Homeland Security to shutter the border if daily illegal crossings top 5,000 migrants on average or 8,500 in a single day."
There's no requiring to admit illegals, in other words "undocumented people", for no reason. That's ridiculous. That's saying " hey, we're going to let the next 5,000 of you cross today, and every day, no questions asked. So come on in". Maga spin, disinformation.
Remember too that this bill comes from the Senate, not the House, because the Repub controlled House is too busy with Hunter Biden's porn pics, trying to impeach Mayorkas, trying to impeach Biden on zero evidence, listening to flailing and failings of MTG, Boebert, Jordan, et. al., to do any actual governing on issues.
It's not a great bill by any means. I don't like it. However, it's pathetic it's taken this long to come up with anything at all because only ONE House of Congress is able to do work while the other has basted in cultural wars and pure GOP chaos for the past 3 years.
It's not clear to me that the House Republicans ever had any interest. Some of the folks in the Senate seemed to be keen on it, but even there plenty were against it.
It's not clear at all to me that the problems at the border are ones that can be solved with another law. The issue appears to be that the executive branch of the current government (the Biden administration) has close to ZERO interest in policing the border or preventing illegals from streaming in. They have the authority from Congress to do so, but they choose not to. Another law won't help if they're not interested in enforcing it. So there's really no point in passing a law. Instead, it would appear that the main goal of the bill being proposed would be to fund the conflict in the Ukraine. That may or may not be a good idea, but has nothing to do with the US border.

I'm not in favor of funding any wars and I think the position of the US should be doing everything that we can possibly do to promote peace. This does not include providing armaments to either side since that just results in more killing.
Yeah. I'm not sure that's what lead to the lack of support for the bill. I think rather the complete refusal to stop illegal immigration on the part of the administration isn't making the Republicans who care about this issue interested in this bill. The bill was drafted by a combination of Democrat leadership that's very much in favor of illegal immigration and the part of the Republican establishment (Mitch McConnell and others) who ALSO like illegal immigration because it benefits some large businesses by depressing wages. My sense is that the majority of the electorate would prefer an orderly immigration policy that's actually enforced, but that's not really what the elected officials are interested in right now.

Congress has already authorized Joe Biden to shut down the border, as Trump did , and even Joe Biden did for a short time on the Canadian side.

As such the proposed bill is a bribe originally conceived as a compromise for money for Joe's foreign policy. Joe Biden should be doing this to keep his job not so he can finance wars all over the world.

What IS clear is that the GOP today has zero interest in any form of representative governing for their constituency. The extremists in the party have their own agenda, which is Project 2025 and making the USA into Gilead. The moderates in the party, or those who say they are, don't really HAVE an agenda other than to get re-elected and continuing to get their benefits, keep their power and grow their wealth.

Did this just suddenly happen? Well yeah, good chance... nobody ever reads the bills until time to vote, and a lot of times they don't read it then. I've been thrown out of so many meetings for calling senators imbeciles in my career it's a wonders I haven't been called before Congress in some sort of retribution. They possibly can't figure out how to do it.

As someone who will be voting for Trump, let me break it down for you.
First, this entire bill is entirely unnecessary because there are already laws against entering the country illegally and requiring the government to secure tge border but the Biden administration is refusing to enforce them. How would passing another law change anything if it won't be enforced?
Second, the bill itself is absolute shit: 60 billion dollars for Ukraine, more handouts to illegals, requires the government to admit 5,000 illegals a day before they can do anything and that only counts people who are from Canada or Mexico meaning the vast majority of the people currently hopping the border wouldn't even count towards that already ridiculously high number. It also makes it easier for the Biden administration to grant them amnesty while handicapping a future Trump administration's ability to secure the border. It also gives away millions in taxpayer dollars to illegals and the woke criminal nonprofits who are helping the cartels smuggle them in.
If Biden was serious about securing the border he could just take the same actions Trump took in office such as the remain in Mexico policy and deportations instead of having CBP act as a fucking welcome wagon to criminal aliens. The only thing this bill does is officially surrender the border to the cartels and their woke allies. Any republican who votes for it should be primaried.

Once the public was informed about the particulars of the bill which would do nothing to stop illegal immigration and just end up funding the war in Ukraine people called their senators and tied up the switchboard for the whole day. The Senators that were voting for this took heed and changed their minds.

I haven’t personally had the time to read it, but from what I have gathered from a couple different sources was the majority of the bill was funding Ukraine, there was money going toward Israel and then a much smaller percentage going to the border.
All the border portion did was give border patrol more power to let more people in and also issue green cards (unverified), while stripping states of their own rights and making it more difficult for another anyones including a different president to come in and try to secure the border by forcing appeals to be heard in Washington DC. (Also unverified). Basically it sounded like a worst case scenario for your typical Republican, securing other countries borders while un-securing ours.
I don't know I'm fine with immigration I just don't like illegal immigration because terrorists are actually a thing and also I think it's not fair to the people who are legit doing this who do it through the cartel because the cartel will just leave them take their money and they will die somewhere out there

I think the Republicans had to know this ahead of time and yet they withdrawn support for the bill much later. I'm trying to figure out why. Somebody else said that the Democrats are interested in getting more votes and the Republicans are interested in getting cheap labor. Those two things make a lot of sense to me.

Enough rational people realized the immigration bill is much like the inflation reduction bill. Neither helped the intended issue and both continued to launder money to Ukraine for the democrat party.
Trump said trying to solve problems for the American people is not beneficial to him personally, so it must be stopped.
