Could America and Russia one day get along?

There is a few land disputes in Europe and a few things they disagree with globally. Most is resolved now. Could they one day get along when all the wars are finished?

Actually for most of our history we did get along fine with the Russians. We have a lot in common with the Russians both very expansive countries with settler cultures.

It wasn't until the Russians became communist that we started disliking their country. In recent years its really only our old political elite still stuck in the cold war and the Democratic party that dislikes them as a political tactic.

This will likely change when Russia ceases to be useful to them as a historic boogy man.

We actually need Russia and friendly relations with them just as Russia will need us to deal with common threats/problems for both of us. So strategically we can't afford to keep butting heads with Russia.

The getting along bit is solely down to Russia. From the 1800’s to present day, Russia has been instrumental in causing conflict. From 1917 onwards the Bolshevik agenda was to push global communism. This resulted in Russia involvement at a global scale. From WW2 onwards into the Cold War, the Russians have been completely been involved with backing those nations not aligned with the West. Even now they are seeking to divide nations and people. If Russia gets along with the US, it will be mainly to isolate Europe from the US and vica versa, it can then deal with each individually. Possibly without Putin there could be a leader that brings democracy, however the Russians have it the same now as they did with the Tsars, no real difference.

Until people stop living in the past there can be no future. Americans can't even get along with other Americans of the wrong race, gender, political belief etc and have an inherited hatred of the russkie boogyman.

Russia on the other hand has little to offer, no one wants to buy stuff made in Russia, it's too cold as a holiday destination and the people have a reputation for being rude and demanding.

But there's hope, people die. As we say here, 'if you want to be a leader, be a bridge' and perhaps the next Russian PM will want to move on from the past.

Historically you British @purplepoppy have long had more problems with Russia than we Americans. I think it is in no small part because of you British that we still have trouble with the Russians today.

I mean literally it was your spy that caused Russia gate, and your leaders that pushed for the Ukrainian war. Arguably your leaders had a lot to do with some of the antagonism in the Cold war too.

Don't get me wrong we love the brutish and would do almost anything for them but the conflict with Russia isn't as naturally in our geographic interest as is it for the British and their historic European powers conflict.

Its true a lot of us hate each-other too but that's for internal political and historical reasons. In reality we Americans and the Russians have a lot in common due to our common geographic histories. Not nearly as much as we have with the British for cultural, and economic reasons but still a lot.

The modern antagonism with Russia is also not something the USA or Russia can afford strategically long term. It is not in the Interest of theses united States for the Russians to be as weak and compromised as they are. That just creates problems along the anti-meridian for us.

I thought that after the Soviet Union collapsed that there was finally going to be co-operation between the two nations. Unfortunately the people that are really calling the shots will not allow it. If there was a real and lasting peace, how would the bomb makers get rich?

It does indeed seem like our own political elite are stuck in the cold war @exitseven , obvious to modern problems and real threats for which we need a strong Russia to control.

Strategically the conflict with Russia is very much antithetical to American interest. Even the Ukraine is inconsequential, Their conquest only reinforces NATO's continued value after the Fall of Afghanistan.

Leftist Europeans may say it undermines NATO but see if eastern Russian states leave NATO knowing what will happen to non-NATO states. The only thing that undermines NATO was our needless involvement in this conflict Risking NATO territory over a non-NATO country.

In reality the rise of the Chinese Communist party power presents the greatest threat America has ever faced. We needed Russia to deal with and contain that threat peacefully. Alienating Russia has made China an unmanageable threat.

will require russia to change some of it's ways and don't see that happening given their cultural history. why would they give up communism and total control?

impossible. even if u. s. communist, comminist governments fight each other for example vietnam invaded cambodia, despite under reds! after u. s. left vietnam war... as feared, and only delayed by vietnam war. also russia china not really allies.

unless russia changed to British style government then they would be allies!

Of course. The question has always been if russia's leader can get along with the rest of the world, including other Russians. People are unsure whether or not Putin would end all life on the planet, including russian life, if he is blocked from imposing his will on the world, because he has demonstrated exactly that carelessness with every Russian h has killed for opposing him. How Russia keeps letting such people get power is a different question, though..

Russia will for the foreseeable future be a geopolitical rival of the US. But to treat Russia like an enemy was foolish- it's best if Russian cooperation with China and Iran is minimized, rather than encouraged as it is now. And US involvement in Ukraine was and is beyond foolish given the lack of US national interests there.

They have things more common than you think they don't. But the US is more powerful these days so they won't like to be aligned with Russia. That's why they were poking Russia to drag it into a war all these years after the Soviet Union has fallen. Now that they've been successful in doing that, I don't think they'll be aligned for the foreseeable future.

We easily could've long ago, but both Russia and the western countries need their boogymen, and the latter is largely in denial of the threat China poses since money has convinced them to look the other way.

I agree with you 100%. I watched the interview with Tucker and Putin, and you can tell how much Putin loves his position. We currently have a brainless/corrupt president, and Putin is using it to his advantage. Why not? I don't blame him. Putin is afraid of Trump, and so is China. Under Trump's watch, Hamas wouldn't have attacked Israel. Iran wouldn't be attacking our troops, and China wouldn't be about to invade Taiwan.

Biden is a complete cluster fuck, so now we have to deal with it.
