Americans are all religious, whether our faiths are in gods or governments or abstracted ideals. That the rest of the world sees no need to celebrate ice cream or kissing or nachos (November 6th) or spider monkeys (September 22nd) or hugging Kevins (October 10th) is regrettable, but we've never been a people to be constrained by others call "proper". Or, for that matter, what WE call "proper", but that's a whole other issue.

Sometimes it is to promote a certain product or activity. Sometimes it is to honor our war veterans. Sometimes it is for religious purposes. We also have a day to honor Labor and a day to have an election. We have a day to file income taxes and a day to celebrate the start of a New Year. I suppose it is just something fun to do.

@Billlewis The Federal Government officially only has 11 holidays, I think maybe only a few of them are indefensible nonsense like Juneteenth which signify nothing historical outside of the State of Texas. There exist State holiday's for such events.

Although I would agree we would be better off adding a few more holiday breaks but only at the start of the year where there is almost none, ideally April or May at the latest. A period of time where there are soo few.
