Generally I think it's going to the type of man that the particular culture wants to encourage men to become to the benefit of that society, most commonly a responsible leader of some sort or a heroic type like a great soldier who risks his life on behalf of others. They tend to pursue a higher and selfless ideal.

That's a bit vague that's usually the common denominator I find in ideals of masculinity throughout cultures. There's going to be a lot of variation especially at the superficial level, but at the heart of it is usually a man of principle who takes responsibility over the well-being of others.

I do think there's often a lot of wisdom in it even if it sometimes confines men into boxes. Like something I think often distinguishes the hero vs. villain in more enlightened cultures is justice (based on principles) vs. vengeance (based on passions). The vengeful one driven by grudges and passions is often the villain or at least antihero or, if hero, often their tragic flaw.

What I think has become very clumsy in more pluralistic societies is that a lot of the wisdom in these types of legends is forgotten with more focus on the superficial aesthetics over the underlying ethics of what distinguishes the "real men": the exemplary ones.
