I work in USA high school. It's in all places, all genders and probably more common than you would think. MANY times it's the female student initiating it with male teacher. Don't get me started on male coaches of women's sports and even moms of students who teacher's tutor are in on the act. Either way it's unethical and rape if not fully legally (different laws across USA) but because consent is tainted by power authority relationship. It's been happening from time immemorial I'm afraid...

What it likely shows is that their news like to share it. Which says something about what news is expected to play well. I guess it is just something americans react to and it sells papers/views.
