No, of course not.
Persons who are transgender are that way because they were born that way.
The difference now compared to decades past is that, in the past, these people had to live a life that was a charade. Now, their condition is recognized as something real and we as a society have evolved to permit these people to "transition" to who they feel they really are.
A perfect example is Bruce-now-Caitlin Jenner, the M2F former 1976 Olympian hero in the Decathalon. Bruce/Caitlin is 74 years old now. Growing up, he had live being a boy and then a man and do what men do: fuck women, be a father, etc. But, internally, he was thinking "This just isn't right. This isn't me. I am supposed to be a girl." Because of the times, he had to live that repressed life for decades. And, worse, he was a household name - for many people old enough to remember, EVERYONE knew who Bruce Jenner was. Jesus, he was on Wheaties boxes and the cover of Playgirl magazine and often on TV!
Coming out saying "I'm a woman!" would have destroyed his career back then. Transgenders and homosexuals did not make it known that they were like that.
But times were changing. Many homosexuals were "out of the closet" with same-sex marriage becoming legally permitted in many states. In April 2015, 2 months before Obergefell v. Hodges which permitted same-sex marriage nationwide, he publicly announced he was in the act of transitioning.

Bruce was the epitome of the all-American hero. He appeared countless times on Wheaties. ... He was the 70’s platonic image of masculinity. For so many Americans, he was, The Man. And yet, as he told Sawyer in April, “Bruce – always telling a lie. He’s lived a lie his whole life about who he is. I can’t do that any longer.”
https://www.youtube.com/embed/JaqLG3myKUkPeople with a lot at stake and in the limelight like Bruce Jenner or Chastity-now-Chaz Bono (F2M) don't become transgender because it's a social trend. They do it because, inside, they do not perceive themselves as the gender that the rest of us see. And, sadly, there are a nontrivial number of people who are like that.
It's not a trend. They were always there. They now don't have to hide.
I want to be clear about the causes of "non-cis, non-hetero-ism" such as transgenderism or homosexuality. A significant and likely most of these people do not have a mental disorder and their issues are essentially a congenital issue. This means that, during their development in the womb, something happened. The likely cause is something called genetic chimerism. This occurs when people who two (or more) distinctly different sets of genes. This can happen when fraternal (sororal) zygotes (NOT identical zygotes) are implanted in the womb very close together. As the embryos develop, they merge so, instead of twins, you get one fetus for a single person but that fetus has two sets of DNA. Now, if those two initial zygotes are 1 female and 1 male, that's going to lead to a baby with one set of male genes and one set of female genes. And, most important, where those genes express themselves during development in the womb will lead to various conditions.
For instance, if the male genes are governing genitalia, then the baby will be a boy with a penis, but if the female genes are governing the brain, then the baby will have a female brain. That will often lead to gay men and/or M2F like Bruce/Caitlin Jenner. If the gene expressions are opposite, that would lead to lesbianism and/or F2M like Chastity/Chaz Bono.
There's a wide spectrum here as to the resulting baby all depending on where these two opposite-sex genes are expressing themselves while still in the womb. (Ever notice how some gay men look so manly but others are rather effeminate?)
This is why some simplistically say there are an infinite number of genders. However, while there are two basic "binary genders", it is possible for a person to be "non-binary".
Food for thought: What about intersex people or hermaphrodites? They fall into this too. For instance, with a hermaphrodite, both male AND female genes are involved in making the genitalia. This is why hermaphrodites may have both a penis and a vagina...
Gender dysphoria is listed as a mental illness

Yup. There some who are sincere in it, but most if it is social media trend hopping.

I think most of it is. Particularly, I think Jr high age girls who are preemptively exhausted with the thought of competing with other women at a social game they don't have any control over just say "fuck it I'm a boy." And that probably makes up half the Trans stuff.
Pretty much. I respect the old school trans people because they seem more genuine in their transitions. But I can’t stand the they/them/non binary/gender fluid whatever crowd…
Well it definitely isn't a biological reality
It's a trend to get easy success without having to work, and becoming part of a privileged group
Of course it is. A sick and twisted social trend that is destroying people’s lives.
Gender dysphoria has always existed but the idea of having it is trendy so people often self-diagnose to be within the social loop.
No but I believe it's mental disorder. Man or woman comes with different challenges in life. changing sex , life will still be challenging
The increase in people identifying as one is. But trans people have been around forever.
More than that, it’s also a mental disorder
I think not.
