Why are certain things not penalized at all?

Like lying about your age on social media, fake IDs, sneaking into movies under age, pirating film/music/games, jaywalking, etc…no punishment for the most part.

Fake IDs can be a crime. Lying on social media is not. Neither is going to movies that are age-restricted.

There are limited resources for law enforcement, so they have to focus on the ones people care about the most.

Because most are so trivial that they are done all the time and do not really impact anyone. Getting into cinemas underage is just something you do as a teen, a bit like getting served at a bar at 17.

If a guy buys a 19 year a drink at a bar…they can go to jail. People lose money when their music is rated. You just don’t care because it doesn’t affect you

Can you tell the difference between a 17 yr old and an 18 yr old?
You can drink at 18, actually you can drink at 16 with a meal.
There are current laws for music and games, don’t see why that’s mixed with trivial.
The law of copyright under the Copyright, Designs and Patents Act 1998, you can get upto 5 years in prison.

@rebelinsteel there are laws against piracy but they are rarely enforced…and you can’t tell a visual difference, but legally there is a big difference so it absolutely needs to be checked

You did not ask why is music piracy not enforced sufficiently to prevent music piracy occurring.

Where do you want police resources aimed at, Jonny getting music from his mate and illegally ripping tracks at 2am or the couple up the road having their car stolen, or drugs being sold on the streets?
The harsh realities is that music copyright is complex and hard to enforce, the costs to take a person to court are high, often the fines do not cover those costs.
Organisations have compliance officers / teams to ensure they don’t accidentally infringe of copyrighted material, this is from images to sounds, to wording in documents.

The penalty for murdering someone is life in prison or in some places death, have murders stopped anywhere?
If you say the penalty for murder is death, you would expect murders to simply stop, they don’t, so penalties for crimes do not stop them occurring.

@rebelinsteel ok but some of it is pretty easily avoidable…like pretty sure there’s scanners now that can detect fake IDs and realistically most people sneak into movies by buying a ticket for another movie and then theater hopping, so if they required proof of ticket before entering the different showrooms they could avoid this…but I get that resources are an issue here to some degree

@jshm2 none of those are silly. As a musician and actor, piracy really hurts my career. You just don’t care because it doesn’t affect you. If you were getting robbed on the daily, you wouldn’t think it was silly

Uh as a musician, not being able to make money because people pirate my music certainly seems important to me. How would you like it if people kept robbing you?

There are already punishments for that though. Fake IDs and sneaking into movies are rites of passage. And some music or games etc are so old that the people charging for them aren’t the original artists or owners anyway. It’s more nuanced than how you’re making it out. Are you the fun police or something?
