Do men who put themselves in harms way deserve to be respected or is it just expected of them without any need for respect?

It really just depends on why they are putting themselves in harms way. If it is just for false bravado or to make themselves seem tough, then, no, that should be respected. People like firefighters or our military who put their lives on the line should be respected.

Neither. You earn respect by doing good things for good reasons. If you put yourself in harms way for a dumb reason or for personal gain, you deserve no respect.

For example I'll respect a guy for being a genuinely good and understanding person, ad opposed to some guy who does stupid shit for attention.

I guess it depends on why they did it and in what way, but generally they'll be respected.
