Should we embrace Minimum wage laws based upon the local cost of living?

To be clear the propose of said laws is not simply to insure everyone in said region can afford to live there.

The real propose (consistent with the real effect of minimum wage laws) is to drive de-urbanization by giving employers a powerful reason to move their employment base if not business out of the overcrowded and over priced city.

Lets be frank about the issue said wage really need to be dynamically set to the prevailing starter home cost with in 20 minutes of place of employment. This is easily known based upon property tax records, and calculated with a simple equations:
Wage * (40*52*4)= Home price.

Cites as such have the option of improving transpiration or availability of homes.

Minimum wage should absolutely be based on the cost of living. When the fed set the original minimum wage, it was meant to be a foundation for working conditions and compensation. States could always set higher minimums if their cost of living demands it. Obviously employers CAN pay more. Most just don’t want to. Make no mistake. Every employer under capitalism would gladly revert back to slavery without hesitation if they could. Bar none. Nobody cares more about their employees‘ health and wellbeing than they do their profits.
There are almost always bills being pushed to repeal minimum wage laws. The corporate fatcats are making MILLIONS per year and spending company profits on lobbyists to put an end to every labor protection in our government, minimum wages, safety standards, health conditions, environmental protections, all of it. If they spent that money on their employees instead, nobody in the country would be making minimum wage. Lobbying is in the billions now. Democrats and republicans ALL take the money, and idiots in this country won’t stop voting for them.

The Feds set a "minimum wage" by FAR too High for much of America.

Frankly the arrogance of Federal politicians dictating a "minimum" is insulting. In reality they were just trying to lord over everyone as if they were incapable of thinking for themselfs while in reality consolidating their own industry by denying less expensive regions a competitive advantage.

There is a good reason the Federal Constitution never gave the feds this kind of power in the first place.

If you really care about cost of living then you follow the constitution and set minimum wage where the the cost of living actually is, locally.

Just because it cost you 800k to get a house in California does not mean you can't get a house for 40k in rural Mississippi.

Indeed the development of Mississippi very much depends upon Mississippi's ability to harness it still much lower cost of living to draw in industry. Just as China and Mexico did to develop their countries.

A 'federal' act robs all the less developed parts of America of their chance. While driving the work overseas for Americans never to see at all.

My proposal is to let states set a wage based upon the actual cost of living within commuter distance of the work place.

Do the math for your area. what is the average cost of a available starter home and divide it by

Starter home cost / 8320 = hourly wage

That is roughly how much you would need to make in said area to maintain a standard of living comparable to the 1971.

For the whole USA including overpriced city and low priced rural areas that is $215,000 or roughly $25.8 an hour.

That is a lot less in places like Missouri or Alabama, and a lot more in places like California or new York. But really you need to do the math within 20 minute commute of the place of business.

I live in Miami Florida. You would have to earn a lot more than minimum wage to even live here unless you live with your parents.

Property taxes are extremely expensive and they doubled mine last summer

I personally don't have starter home numbers for Miami Florida but I'm sure the state of Florida does as they charge Property taxes.
They by necessity must have a exact value for every house in the state and therefore would know the average starter home cost within 20 minutes of every location in the state.

So if we take the much higher average home value for the city of Miami of around $575,859. Then the legal minimum wage for the middle of said city would be around 575,859 /(40*52*4) = $69.21 an hour.
