Happy Independence Day! 🇫🇷 🇫🇷 🇫🇷
Yes, ours also used to be very meaningful and important. Political games have influenced the way it's been celebrated, though.
I’m Italian and I think our national festivity is something important. In theory we have 2: the June 2nd when we became a republic (that’s a real festivity) and the March 17th, national unity (that’s not a festivity). I think we should celebrate both since they’re the moments our history developed and brought us to the point we are actually.
Considering The Terror that followed and how short the time was between Louis XVI and Napoleon, I don't see why the French celebrate Bastille Day. The Revolution failed and led to the dictatorship of Robespierre then eventually the dictatorship of Napoleon.
Yes, did he have checks and balances or was he an autocrat?
so he could have his decrees overruled? He had to ask the legislature for money?
As historian Thierry Lentz wrote
"For fifteen years, Napoleon spent every minute strengthening and defending his power, even if it meant becoming increasingly authoritarian. But to speak of a dictatorship, or a military dictatorship at that, is to make a mockery of the meaning of words. The army was not in charge, and the powers to prevent it remained. Even Marxist historian Albert Soboul agreed: "The regime remained essentially civilian". "
so a legislature or court could over-rule Napoleon?
Happy celebration Julie!
it is very important to me and I teach to my students every year about our flag and some basic laws of our country. We are salute to our flag everyday.

We don’t actually have a national holiday in England. There has been talk of it, potentially St George’s Day as an English national holiday.
we could have 18 June or 21 Oct, however St George’s would be better placed.
Nah, it would likely give people an idea to do it again.
Also most do not know the date.
Well someon had to start the heads rolling lol.
Also January would be a bit cold for a national holiday.
When I was a lad, winos drank a cheap "sherry" (about $1.25 if memory serves) called St. George wine !!!
Happy Bastille Day. Australia Day is a friends & family, Barbecue and Beer day. Nominally it is celebrating the First Fleet but some activists want to call it Invasion Day. Given a recent 2/3 referendum vote against wokery I think Australia Day is safe.
Closest thing we've got to a national holiday is St Davids day but we don't get time off work. There have been calls for it to be a holiday but we don't like to make a fuss.
Yes, I consider it important. It's a day in which we celebrate our independence and our national heroes.
It's on the 11th of November.
I find it important. It's nice to meet a French on gag ^^
Yay, you guys finally found each other!
Happy Bastille Day. Are you doing anything fun?
@KostasKouvalis Yes we did this is great ^^
Thank you :)
I'm watching the tour de France and Euro finals so a really great day
Oh, Tour de France is happening?
I'm watching Euros too. I'm rooting for England. I don't like Spain and England never win anything.
Then in the evening I'll be watching Copa America Final.
Canada Day is VERY important. I should have been born Canada Day (July 1) 1953, but arrived five days late.
the food is great... and of great importance, yes...
Yes, MY national holiday is about celebrating the killing of the French 😃
It's a secret, miss! I keep my nationality to myself on sites like this. But it was once under French rule like many other countries.
Non ☺️

Independence Day in the US is my favorite holiday. There are a lot of rituals that reminds us of what a great country that America is.
Yes but because it is the UK we are a bunch of traitors. We do not even get a day off for it
Being a Patriot is not a bad thing to me. Sadly some don't agree.
I think it is important to celebrate the best aspects of your country.
I do. Bastille Day is cool too.
It is important to me because I love my country.
