Lately, there has been a lot of talk on canceling and renaming them in certain countries.

Most of the US federal holidays are okay, some could use tweaking/renaming, like Juneteenth and Columbus Day

January 1 - New Years Day
January 16 - Martin Luther King Day **
February 22 - Presidents Day **
last Monday in May - Memorial Day
June 19 - Juneteenth **
July 4 - Independence Day
1st Monday in September - Labor Day
October 10 - Columbus Day **
November 11 - Veterans Day **
4th Thursday in November - Thanksgiving
December 25 - Christmas Day
** - Holiday is the closest Monday

Christmas Day should be called Newtonmas Day, as it’s the day Sir Isaac was born. Yeshua of Nazareth was probably born in the summer (or autumn or spring). Columbus Day must be dropped and Leif Eriksson Day be put instead. Eids, Rosh haShana, Hanukkah, Sukkoth, Pesach, and Yom Kippur must be up there as well.

@Curmudgeon and Hanukkah for Jewish Americans? Was St Pat’s Day originally celebrated in Ireland or not? 5 May celebrated in Mexico? I know many Scandinavian Americans and as I’m Russian, I think We have Scandinavian ancestry. We ought to celebrate Leif Eriksson Day, honouring the bloke who discovered America, apart from Grønland (which was also discovered by a Scandinavian, Erik the Red).

I love pretty much all holidays we have in the states. Especially the ones coming up, Veterans Day, then the Marine Corps birthday. Which isn’t a nationals holiday but might as well be the way Marines celebrate. The one holiday I’m not fond of is Columbus Day, most natives like me celebrate Indigenous day.

Yes I am. From Arizona. Other than that most of the holidays I’m good w. If you look at history there’s a lot of controversial things that people don’t know about. Like Caesar Chavez. A lot of Hispanic celebrate him but don’t realize he wasn’t that good of a person.

Yah, California gives his birthday, March 31, a holiday for the state government if no one else. Ironically, Caesar Chavez was THE original Border Wall advocate! His UFW would actually *beat up* illegals crossing to work the fields. After all, illegal alien labor was undercutting the wages of actual US Citizen crop pickers like himself. But somewhere along the way, "LA Causa" of better wages and benefits, turned into "La Raza" of just importing more of a particular group to sway elections, and entry level job wages were forgotten entirely.

Mine aren't controversial at all. Birthday of Quaid and Christmas on same day. There is 9 November for Iqbal Day, then we have 14 Aug independence, 23rd March as Pakistan day, 1st July and 31st December is Bank Holidays. And we have 3 days each for 2 Eid holidays and 2Ashura holidays these 5 depend on lunar calendar. Nothing controversial as such

Or, to be specifically American: Thanksgiving? Labor Day? MLK Day? President's Day, which was formerly two, Washington and Lincoln's birthday? (OK, you can quibble about those two as wartime leaders, but we *didn't* set those dates to Valley Forge or Gettysburg anniversaries, you know).

And the 4th of July was the date Independence ostensibly was declared, not actually won (1783 sometime) or on the anniversary of Yorktown (1781 sometime).
