I'll make some bold predictions here, and say the following about the gunman: he was a loner, a guy who couldn't get laid but idolised women. So you were wrong about it being 2 fans and only arguably correct about a "sad individual in a heroic defense", because I'm of the impression you thought they were shielding Trump or something (but I could be wrong).

I'm also curious, if you were in public with your husband or father and gunshots began ringing out and you couldn't tell where they were coming from, would you think your husband or father is a sad individual if they were covering your body with theirs?

I think it´s part of cultural and social development. Yes the target was political but I think saying it´s not just a political issue and therefore comments like that shows how desperate Democrats are is not the whole story of it. I would say there is more than that since it´s again a young guy that is the only shooter, he also uses an AR-15. To me it´s rather a part of this up coming trend of young men that use violence as they don´t have any way to articulate themselves.

Point is that his own supporters has the highest motive for assassinating Trump. More specifically, while many people hate Trump, its more of an abstract thing rather than a personal feeling of hatred. Usually not something that would motivate someone to assassinate a former president. His supporters however has something more to draw upon, betrayal. Trump is a liar and he abandons his own supporters as easily as waking up in the morning. The number of people who has become disillusioned of Trump after all these years is probably in the millions.

Countless people who burned brightly for Trump and now feels like they have been betrayed. It does not take much for that same burning passion to turn into a burning hatred.
