My husband & I considered buying homes in Portugal, Spain and the Netherlands but I was warned of a potential gentrification trend that we might trigger.

We got the hint and we'll honor the request to respect their communities.

All the doesn't discourage us from visiting as often as we'd to vacation there.

@DeeDeeDeVour that's fair enough but I don't want a browning of white countries and I'm not alone, should my views be respected as well? All white countries seem to be viewed as fair game.

@msc545 Browning is the word that I've heard POC use when celebrating what they are doing to white countries. You have already lost an argument to me and resorted to removing my last post and preventing me from reposting in an attempt to save face. you aren't worthy of my time.

I can only answer it in the reverse, there are circumstances where i'd move to the US since I fit in with the culture there. For example if my next girlfriend is American or if I land a really promising career there. But right now with how tense the situation is there i'd probably wait a bit to double check where the country goes.

Possibly. I’m super picky about food though, and I don’t like most European cuisine, so that would be tough on me. Maybe Italy would work…. but I’d get fat on all the pasta😂

But I’ve just about had my fill of Americans, lmao, so I’d be open to it.

Yes, I would love to move to Europe (for a few years).

Why would move there: Europe is beautiful! I would love to go see Europe, make friends, pick up new slang, etc. Plus, I can track my family tree right back to nobility, so I would love to go see some of the lands and mansions they had.

Why I wouldn't want to stay: As much as Europe intrigues me, I'm American. While I'm sure I would miss it after moving away, it will never be my home.

yes, we discovered we have some illnsesses in USA that go away in Europe. Your food supply is likely less poisoned. Thank you, keep up the good work to keep USA pollution out.

I'd consider it as additional place to life, not the only one.

Yes although, outside of the UK or Ireland, I'd have to learn the language. I am decent at that, so I don't think that would be too much of a problem. I have difficulty translating native speakers at their natural speed, but I can pick up written languages rather well.

I've thought about it. I did live a few months in London several years ago, for a business project. It wouldn't be London though if I were to move. Some possibilities are Scotland, Sweden or Norway. I've visited each of them and had a great time there.

More likely, I'll just stay here in the good old US of A.

It's not that it's all bought up in the US, but instead it's that it is all far too expensive for almost everyone. Even people with really good jobs have difficulty buying property and maintaining it.

The US has a lot of undeveloped area because we are still somewhat new. The bottleneck is the house builders not the land itself. But Europe has been removed from a tribal society for much longer so its overall population density is more or less at capacity, which makes the land the thing to purchase not the structures. In the US you can get a blank acre of land for like a hundred dollars if you don't mind it being in the middle of nowhere. In Europe at this point it seems there would be no such thing as the middle of nowhere.

      Reply
    • msc545
      msc545
      +1 y

Okay, there are two problems with this. The first problem is that a lot of that allegedly undeveloped land is in the middle of a desert where nobody wants to or actually can live. There is no water. There is excessive heat and there are no utilities and there won't be you need built for a very long time if ever. Nobody wants to buy into this no matter how cheap the land is.

The second problem is that the cost of land isn't really the problem. The problem is the cost of actually building the house. The cost of materials and the cost of Labor is excessive and that drives up the price significantly. Additionally, the cost of financing is absolutely horrible with about a 7 to 8% your interest rate on home loans right now. Maybe more in some areas. There's actually a third problem and that is the cost of homeowners insurance which is mandatory. If you're going to finance anything. Those costs have been going up with a lot of homeowners insurance companies simply canceling policies because they feel like the risk is too high. This is direct ly related to climate change which has resulted in many more fires and floods than usual.

I don’t know the laws I would be afraid to put all my house money into a bank account. Overseas I’m not familiar with than one day. It’s totally gone. I just don’t trust it. I could see something like this happen in Nicaragua somewhere or over in Cuba no way I’m taking that chance
