Gambia voted to uphold its ban on female genital cutting, can we extend the same protections to men in the US?

Lawmakers in the West African nation of Gambia rejected a bill that would have overturned a ban on female genital cutting. Gambia was the first country to attempt to overturn such a ban.

The arguments for overturning the ban is that female genital cutting makes women more clean, and that it is a religious requirement, paralleling arguments made for male circumcision in the United States.

Circumcision/gential cutting should just be illegal everywhere unless the person is over 18 and consents to getting it done

The more boys I have the more disgusted I get that some parents seriously choose to cut up their sons genitals. Boys need to be protected and loved from birth so they grow up knowing how to protect and love women. If they get their consent taken away from day 1 of their life it's gonna be a lot more difficult to learn real consent later on in life

I agree with the consent aspect too. Of course decisions need to be made for our children, but modifying their body is not a decision we should even need to make. It should just not even be a question.

Yeah its very different for surgery that's 100% for their health. I have done that before for my kids but I'd never do a surgery like circumcision that isn't necessary

What does this have to do with mixing law with religion? Bans on forced genital mutilation aren't religiously motivated.

As an aside. Im cut and forever grateful for that. I also understand that parents made a decision for me they were NOT allowed to make.
