Same reasons people have been fleeing california for years. They can't afford to live their with high house prices, high rents, crime, homelessness, low wages, high food prices, state and local government overreach and failures, ilegal migrants, protests etc.

The state like california under democrat liberal policies has been divided up between the wealthy and the Middle and working class have less of a stake in it now so they must go elsewhere or live in poverty.

NYer here. The cost of living is ASTRONOMICAL! In my region middle class is a combined income of $250 a year. Finding a shitty home on a small lot is gonna be $700K easy. The taxes are oppresive (but in truth the public services are excellent). Everyone has a NIMBY mentality when it comes to building affordable housing And then these fucking boomers complain that their kids are all moving away.

New York lost 102k people between 2022-2023. New York has lost about 600k people since 2020 which has not been seen in US history before. California only lost 75k for a state of 39 million, California has not lost a lot of people.

CA has higher emigration rates, but the net loss is blunted by the inflow of both legal and illegal immigrants. There were some years where CA was still number 1 for net loss percentage too, I'm pretty sure.

I do agree however politics have a lot to do with it. New Yorkers are a more moderate bunch than say California, if you throw in a hard liberal government New Yorkers would be more likely to leave, and live closer to the cheapest state which are mostly in the south, and have more selection like Florida, NC, SC, Tennessee, Georgia, and Virginia, than say just Texas or Idaho for Californians.

No actually, New York has more people move out out the state than any state has ever seen before since 2020-2024. It’s never been done by any state including California or New Jersey.

NYer here. A lot of that outflow is retirees who are cashing in on their now empty nest but highly appreciated real estate and young kids who can't afford it here.
