Was this global tech outage a matter of time?

After all, I'm 30 years old, and when I was 20 I was still carrying cash, still posting letters, while still enjoying an iPod touch and a iPad mini and a dumb phone. Nowadays and even since 2020 just before Covid, I use smartphones, I use debit cards, few letters and few actual cash.
It's a modern technology electronic invisible world. Lol. What is material object, lol deliberate broken English. Lol. Was it really only a matter of time, our reliance on tech now? Whether 2014 whether 2020 whether 2024 lol. (I was 20 in 2014). Lol.

This was a case of extreme negligence from both Crowdstrike, which distributed the broken driver and every victim that is not a normal person at home.

First of all, when you roll out patches like this you should always do them in small groups, in case something like this were to happen. For example, you choose 100 random customers and send out the patch to them and wait a little while. If everything turns out good then you send it to 1000 or 10 000 etc.. until everyone gets it. Even if the patch was broken, which is another case of negligence, it should never have impacted as many people as it actually did.

As for the victims. If you are a corporation, lets say a bank. Then you have an IT department. Part of that IT departments job is to manage updates to the system. No application should be allowed to automatically update, instead every update should first be downloaded onto test machines in the IT where they can see if there would be any problems on the rest of their computers and then the IT department would push out a bundle of updates to all the computers in their system, presumably overnight when no one needed them.

In other words, this is not the fault of technology. This is the fault of people not doing their jobs.

I agree, but our politicians would never allow it to be any other way. They love having mega corporations being an extension of the State itself. It's how they can control everything and bypass the fourth amendment.

@BetaBucks It also a lot to do with becuracts preferring big names and standardization in order to simplify administrative risk.

windows is a crap operating system and has been since they tried to fix it with windows NT, 2000, etc... and failed. core operating stuff should be operating system, not 3rd party eh? How often do you roboot your mainframes and have crap like that happen?

Loads of retailers are unable to process a payment without a working computer these days.
There is far too much reliance on tech I have a massive dislike of cars that have no physical connection from the door handles to the locks and latches, or steering or brakes.

This outage is really a reminder that we should have an analogue backup to any tech services relied upon!

I wasn’t aware of the global tech outage, but this does remind me of the nationwide debit system blackout a couple of years ago here in Canada. It caused significant problems for me as I planned to renew my driver’s license that day and didn't find out until I got to the DMV.

Debit is important to me partly because I have OCD and physical cash is one of the grimiest things in existence.

Even worse than the debit problem though was gaining access to a phone to call the friend who had driven me there and left to do errands. A liberal extremist turned to a co-worker behind a desk and said I needed a phone to call my BOYFRIEND. HELLO, I said FRIEND and having a male friend does NOT make me gay, even in a small city where the brass try to attract new residents by painting/flying rainbows everywhere.

The global tech outage was purely and simply an error , a badly compiled software update that’s happened a million times previously and will happen a million times more. The fact that CrowdStrike was the security vendor integrated into the windows environment into many key companies and authorities exponentially increased the scale of the outage.
Unfortunately any error is just matter of time.. we are after all imperfect !

Sooner or later, everything fails. The past few weeks were not good for technology. Three different space rockets had failures, and then the Crowdstrike global outage happened.

This was one update, made by a third party vendor, that was not tested on an isolated system in a dry-run beta type of scenario (which is SOP for ANY updates). It went "hot" straightaway and bombed!

After the isolated dry-run beta, you give a limited release (as mentioned by others too) but nope- they went hot right off the bat with no testing.

And, of course, I always carry cash!

Mostly this is a Windows thing -- the security code can't do it's job without getting deep inside Windows, which creates the risk that it can crash the machine. It did.
