Is It Hypocritical For Democrats To Not Have An Open Convention?

Democrats hail themselves as the party of democracy and state that if they lose this election American democracy will fall, now Joe has stepped down and there’s some question about who will receive the nomination. Were the party to elect someone without holding an open convention would it be hypocritical?

It is an open convention. The delegates have no requirements. They can vote how they want.

Right now they’re not discussing an open convention. They’re talking about electing Kamala without opposition, or am I wrong?

There's just kind of an assumption both because she was the VP and obvious successor and because Biden endorsed her but no one can force any of the delegates to vote a certain way. All that said, no one else seems to be speaking up about running.

Obama’s original statement seemed to indicate he wasn’t supporting Kamala, but rather an open process. That seems to be going by the wayside. There are plenty of congressman I’m sure would want to run again given the opportunity ie Buttigieg, Bernie, Klobuchar etc all the people who did better than her in the last democratic primary. They just feel that they can’t due to pressure from “the party”. Or do you see it differently?

So not opening up the field to a new vote is democratic, because they voted for Joe earlier and she was his running mate. Is that a fair restatement?

Sort of. The reason no one expects there to be primaries on October 31st is not just because of the candy, but also there is too much that needs to be done before the election to be ready for it. We are approaching that point to quickly to completely start over the nomination process. Ordinarily we would quickly cobble together some plan that would almost certianly backfire in some political way (no one complains as loudly about the way democrats conduct their internal affairs as republicans, and they own all the media), but because everyone knew kamala was the successor a plan already exists that's much cleaner.

Republicans are the same in that they also consider their nomination process to be an internal affair. Yes, anyone can vote, but you have to register as a republican first. That makes it internal. The actual democratic process occurs in November.

Correct, but Democrats are uniquely saying that if republicans win democracy is over. My thinking is if that’s the case they should hold themselves to a different standard. The democratic voters elected Biden, not Kamala. She won a total of 800 votes and dropped out before the primaries last time because nobody wanted her. Now it seems to me she’s being foisted on Democrats. Is that not a fair assessment? And if so why not?

Republicans are saying if Republicans win democracy is over. Democrats are just repeating their words to someone besides their target audience.

I see the republican argument as different. They say that if the Democrats win we’ll be pushed into WW3, inflation will skyrocket, and they’ll start to forcibly remove genitalia from children. All bad surely, but I haven’t heard them claim that democracy will be over. Any time I hear a Democrat pundit however I hear that if Trump is elected democracy is dead, he’ll be a dictator etc.
do you see the two parties claims similar as I do, or am I missing something?

They wrote it down. There is no "seeing it as different" than what they wrote down unless you also want project 2025 but are pretending it's not a thing because you know you aren't going to get it any other way.
