I think oil companies are truly trying to leave less of a footprint than in the past, for all the right reasons - as well as some purely propagandistic ones.

Don't assume corporations are evil. That's a gross overgeneralization. Sure they are in it for the money, but so are you every day you go to work. They're just doing it on a larger scale for a lot more people.

Corporations are people. Don't swallow the communist "they are all evil and want everyone dead" narrative. Where's the margin in killing all your customers anyways?
