Whats your thoughts on the hippie movement in the 60s?

It was kind of an offshoot of beatnik culture and a rebellion against the buttoned down WWII generation.

Hippie culture embraced peace, love, tolerance, open mindedness, justice and fairness, liberty and freedom, distrust of authority, and opposition to war and violence.

There was support for the civil rights movement and women's liberation (the pill had just recently been legalized). And there was opposition to the draft.

Hippies fended for themselves and didn't depend on government.

Like kids of every generation, they used style to demonstrate their uniqueness. Long hair, "mod" clothes, beads and jewelry, etc. were reflected by media and popular entertainers from Jimi Hendrix, Jefferson Airplane, Sonny and Cher, to Rowan and Martin's Laugh In, and many, many more. You could buy retro clothes in thrift shops and mix and match to create whimsical outfits. There was also tie dye. And when your Levis wore out from actual use, you could secure the holes with cool patches.

The previous generation made a fetish out of booze and cigarettes. Those were ubiquitous on TV and in movies. The minute anyone walked into a house the host would offer them a drink.
The hippie generation moved to experimenting with drugs like pot and hallucinogenics. Of course, pot had already been popular for decades, especially in minority communities and with certain subcultures.

There was psychedelic music and art, black light posters, etc.
Beginning with folk music, song lyrics became socially conscious and began to have meaning for the first time.

Lots of people who adopted "hippie" style and values were in college and were educated. They went on to have careers. The idea that hippies were lazy isn't accurate.

But hippies did have kind of a natural, back to the Earth, anti-consumer attitude. They weren't into name brand fashions, expensive cars or suburban homes with lawns. They could be happy with a VW van, living in a yurt, and being surrounded by nature and whimsical things.

It's true that there was a lot of promiscuous sex, but that's okay as long as they didn't pass around diseases. A few gravitated to communes that didn't last long. And some got carried away with drugs to their detriment or death.

The hippie thing had passed by the time I was old enough. The Summer of Love was in 1967 when I was 13. But I thought the styles were cool and the values still strongly resonate with me.

I thought it was rebellious but also fun. And it was necessary, given the repressive, conservative climate of the times. I mean, look what they did the Lenny Bruce. Look at McCarthyism. Look at racism. I thought things were changing for the better, but the government soon figured out how to subvert it.
The only downside was, some young people unintentionally harmed themselves with hard drugs.

I just remember it a little bit because there was some kind of commune where I went in the summer. They were a bunch of freaks. My father was not a fan. My next door neighbor had some ducks and one of the hippies stole one. My neighbor walked up the their house and banged on the door. He marched in the house and opened their refrigerator and found the duck in there. He grabbed it and walked out. This guy was a lobsterman and they thought twice about messing with him

Drugs being sold that are lethal, sex with almost every woman has to be paid for?

Kids my age and a little younger don't want to work because they're too lazy or want to try to go to college?

I've been working since I was 18 and had 10 different jobs since then. Too much of this woke shit going on. I hate it and I hate the people who follow it.

Misguided people rejecting responsibility and order, disguising their anarchic beliefs with "love". Addicts, runaways, dope smokers and generally chaotic people.
