The history of it is kinda sad to me. The music itself was just that, music. It was a new kind of pop music genre if we’re being honest, but it started to fill up night clubs and other party spots that were popular at the time, and guess which group happened to frequent night clubs? Gay people, gay men, gay women, trans folks, the party scene was their scene and it was great. They liked it, and suddenly the genre became associated with them. This was just after the stonewall riots so being openly queer was still very, very new as more and more states were refusing to prosecute a consensual relationship as criminal sodomy and all that. And as with every big, societal change, there are people who are vehemently opposed to it. As disco became associated with queer communities, it became hated. People talked about how awful it was, how it was trash, it didn’t deserve to be on the airwaves, etc. and it culminated in Disco Demolition Night. It was an event hosted by a Chicago radio station on a baseball field where they offered discounted tickets to anyone attending with a disco vinyl so that, at the end of the event, the vinyl records would be piled up and burned right there in the field. It turned into a massive riot, burning these records, hatred ignited by the massive stadium-size bonfire that led to lots of property getting damaged and people getting hurt. That was essentially the “death” of disco, it suddenly was no longer a safe thing to enjoy, and it just fell off into oblivion.

Disco music was really circulating the drain by the late 70s. It had had its 5 minutes of fame, and even that was too much. There was some good music that came out of it, but most of that was in 1976-1977.

Disco was one reaction to the insipid protest music of the 60s. But then it metamorphosed into punk performers like Billy Idol and new wave performers like Duran Duran. Also out of disco also came the reborn Rhythm and Blues, such as Shai and En Vogue. Those three art forms were some of the best music in entertainment history. Two of the best disco songs were I will Survive by Gloria Gaynor and I feel Live by Donna Summer.

And in reality? I feel Love was actually one of the original Techno songs. With the exception of Donna Sommer's voice, the music was made on a "disco machine" in Germany. For years, I was associated with one of her groupies by the name of Barbara Ann Rivers. With her, I learned a lot about Donna Summer. Even though she has gone now, I have had a crush on Donna Summer ever since I heard that song.

The music we hear nowadays, would not even get to first base compared to what was going on in the 70s and 80s. What the hell is Taylor Swift, anyway?
