First in a series of rock songs from the late '60s through the '70's. Do you like music from that era?

Inspired by@exitseven's series on song lyrics, I thought I'd share some favorite songs that aren't necessarily played in the Classic Rock station rotations.

Songs often just pop into my head and I thought it would be fun to share a few to see what you think.

This one by Spirit was in my head today.
"I Got a Line on You" from 1968 gets my motor runnin'.

Here's a bonus track. It's not exactly rock, but it shows Spirit's versatility and craftsmanship. I love this song.
"Nature's Way" from 1970.

That's a catchy tune. If I didn't know any better, I'd hear some "Redbone" in that swanker although a lot of music at that time, had a similar feel to it. no wonder the kids were having a good time and the parents were drinking... to driving down the road in a v8 chevy with that on the radio... shangrila!

Funny, that phrase "I gotta line on" means something else to me. I think it means..."I see the girl," but to me..."I got my gun sight on you". What did it mean back then?

oh those 45's... the other side was always crap to me, haha:-) Even Jackson 5 put junk on the other side. I was so frustrated listing to the B sides. I was lucky enough to grow up and find a pile of old vinyl from dad and sister, and 8 tracks soon thereafter, and play them over and over and scratch the heck out of em. That was fun, every kid should get an old record player and some vinyl! Good memories!

It sounded so much more full than this plastic music on thin speakers.

I remember hearing the phrase "I've got a line on a new job". I think it goes way back, at least to the 1930s. It means that you have helpful information about something or someone.
I don't know what he meant in the song, but I agree that it probably did mean that he has his sights on her, as you said.

Redbone was a later band and was probably heavily influenced by some of that late '60s rock & roll dance music.

Yeah, you could blast the music in your car when you were driving your car down the highway. You reminded me of the lyrics in the Eddie Money song Shakin'
Rosanna's daddy had a car she loved to drive
Stole the keys one night and took me for a ride
Turned up the music just as loud as it could go
Blew out the speakers in her daddy's radio

I totally remember that song. :-) It's from 1971, the same time period.

1971 was a very good year for music.

It sure was. I started going to concerts in 1970 and went to hundreds throughout that decade. I saw just about every band.

In 1970, I saw Black Sabbath open for Grand Funk Railroad., and Yes open for Deep Purple.

I lived in the L. A. area, so we went to clubs, halls, auditoriums, and stadiums from San Diego to Santa Barbara.

I got used to hearing a lot of 70s music when I worked at my town grocery store as a kid growing up. 70s on 7 became a daily thing. While not entirely my go to, I do enjoy some 70s from time to time.

That makes sense it's like rock and roll rock, almost like they were influenced by it and changed it a bit. It's really nice to listen too, not sure about the second one but that's on me I tend to like faster paced songs than slower. I tend to find the slower paced songs I like has to have a good story something like blurry puddle of the mud.

Great song. I heard about them in a music theory class when the instructor was talking about songs that influenced other songs. He argued that the into to Stairway to Heaven was influenced by another song by Spirit. If you listen at about 45 seconds in you can hear why he said this.

Yeah, Randy California's heirs sued Led Zep for stealing that riff/chord progression. They lost.

Spirit did open for Zep on one tour and Jimmy Page might have heard that riff. But Jimmy didn't play it the same way on Stairway to Heaven. And it's a stretch to say you "invented" a chord progression and that someone "stole" it from you. Jeeez every artist is influenced by other artists. Nothing is brand new unless you copy it exactly. It's just the way that you play it that makes it unique.

Only Jimi Hendrix did things that had never been heard of before by using effects, feedback and tremolo bar. But even he learned his riffs by studying other artists when he was learning.

I like music from all decades. Rock, pop, big band, jazz, R&B, soulful house, progressive house, swing, bluegrass, trip hop, hip hop, orchestral, classical, new wave, Ska, electronica, and electro swing.

The Beatles, Madonna, The Moody blues, The Andrew Sisters, Diana Ross and the Supremes, Jamiroquai, Janet Jackson, The Who, The Alan Parsons Project, Genesis, Pink Floyd, Kelly Clarkson, Santana, The Brand New Heavies, Incognito, Masters at Work, Shirley Bassey, Level 42, Phil Collins, Kenny Logins, and Billy Joel to name a few.

Yeah, I like variety, lol. I usually listen to music when I'm writing. Keeps the creativity going.

I was actually talking about Natures Way. I looked and Christopher Cross covered this song not Neil yuong.

I never heard another version of that. I like the timpani drum, percussion and vocal harmonies in the Spirit version. I actually put together a band for a one-time, Earth Day performance with all the instruments including timpani and cow bell. I played acoustic guitar and sang lead. There was another acoustic guitar and an electric guitar and harmony vocalists. It was great. I always loved that song.
