Fourth in a series of rock songs from the late '60s through the '70's. Do you like it?

Captain Beyond is the debut album, released in 1972 by the band Captain Beyond, an American rock supergroup featuring former members of Iron Butterfly, Deep Purple, Johnny Winter.

It’s a concept album. Most of the songs flow together, so it’s hard to just pick one song. So I shared the entire album. (Youtube fucks it up by inserting commercials)

I recommend listening to at least the first 13 minutes. Those first three songs will give you the idea.
And BY ALL MEANS listen to the last song, beginning at 33:30. It’s 2 minutes long. It makes my shoes fly off of my feet and my hair catch on fire. And it cracks me up so hard.

This is one of my favorite albums. It’s still as good today as it was back then.
Bobby Caldwells drumming kicks ass. And the use of different time signatures makes it extra interesting compared to typical rock songs.

Oh wow, I forgot this band existed. I haven't listened to them, since around the time I found them a few years ago.

I like it, but I think a lot of the music is experimental on their part even outside of this album, so some of the songs I do not care for. However, one song I always liked by them was Bright Blue Tango

I like that song. Sufficiently Breathless is a really good album.

I usually play that opening drum riff a bit faster. It's in a steady 5/4. The only changes come in the middle and near the end. That song is included in my Blisters collection and it followed immediately by, "Animal" by The Edgar Winter Group.

That's a cool Edgar Winter song. I really like the swirling, psychedelic thing that starts around the 3 minute mark.

Are you saying that you are a musician and used to play the intro to Dancing Madly Backwards?
I'm a guitarist and we used to play that song, too. 😃

Yes, one evening at rehearsal, we were talking about Captain Beefheart and Captain Beyond was tossed in and my singer asked if I know how to play Dancing Madly Backwards.. So, I did.
I was with the band for 25 years.
Well, we never actually played that song but, nearly every time I sit at the drums or if Mr. Soundman needs me to play something, I play several bars of that. My singer and I were the only ones in the band that knew it.
At one point, we had guitarist who thought the Sun shone from Robert Fripp's ass! Every time we had a few moments between songs, he'd start his Fripp noodling. At that point in time, I wasn't even sure who Fripp was! I'd only heard the 1st King Crimson album years before and had no idea they had any others. Around that same time, my brother came home from the Air Force with a high-dollar stereo and about 100 albums including nearly everything King Crimson had done up the early `80's. One night, he played, "Red" and I was just doing whatever I was doing in the next room, not even paying any attention to what he was playing! A few nights later, we were playing a gig and Tim started playing "Red" between songs and, SOMEHOW, I recognized it and started playing along with him on drums and the rest of the band jumped in and we played it FLAWLESSLY!!
A few weeks later, we had another gig in the same venue and it was decided we'd try "Red" again. We failed miserably!! Lol. Another drummer wanted to try so, I let him and he couldn't do it, either!

Especially the Bruford era. I was amazed to find out that he and Chris Squire are just as tall as me! I only met Chris once a couple years before he died but I've met Bill a few times.

I went to a concert at the UC Santa Barbara football stadium when Heart was brand new. They had just released their first album.
They opened, followed by Lynyrd Skynyrd who had just released Free Bird. And the headliner was the newly formed Jefferson Starship. At that concert, most of the original members of Airplane, including Gracie, were also with the band.

Anyway, Heart was freaking amazing. They were just as perfect when I saw them live as they are in that video. The crowd went wild. For their encore (which is rare for an opening act) they played Rock and Roll by Led Zeppelin. Ann and Nancy are incredible. Ann is a master guitarist and FUCK Ann can sing! And she was gorgeous back then.

I love that album. I had the CD for years, but recently found it on vinyl.

I have the CD, too. But I still have an original vinyl copy with the 3D cover that moves when you tilt it.

It's so cool that you are familiar with that album. How did you originally hear about it?

I have been a fan of Deep Purple and Iron Butterfly for many years and I knew those guys form this band called Captain Beyond, so I tracked the CD down and have loved it ever since. They also have a third album called Dawn Explosion with a different singer.

Very cool. I've been a Deep Purple fan since they first formed. The first time I saw them live was in about 1971 when they were touring the Fireball album. Yes opened for them. LOL

I was in a popular garage band in high school and through my early 20s. One of my signature songs was Highway Star. I was the guitarist and vocalist. I could play Blackmore's lead almost perfectly and I could even improvise something that approximated the keyboard solo.

It's fun to meet someone (especially your age) who loves those driving rhythms and the kind of rock that hooked me when I was in high school.
I was playing different music in bands before I heard bands like Sabbath and Purple. I became a rocker. LOL
Light Out in London another one I played and sang in three man bands, although that came out several years later.

That version you posted was cool. But they only showed 4 band members. I heard a harmony guitar and definitely keyboards. They keyboard solo was hot.

Are you thinking of Bobby Caldwell the singer who died recently?

They are two different people. The Bobby Caldwell in Captain Beyond is a drummer. He recorded and toured with many groups over the years including Johnny Winter, Rick Derringer, the Allman Brothers Band, Captain Beyond, and Armageddon.

I made the same mistake several years ago. I looked up Bobby on-line and found some guy wearing a suit and fedora singing Sinatra stuff. I was totally confused. Then I tried searching for Bobby Calwell drummer and found who I was looking for.. LOL
