"All my life, I have had a certain idea of France. This feeling is inspired in me as much by sentiment as by reason. What is emotional in me naturally imagines France, like the princess from fairy tales or the Madonna in frescoes on walls, as destined for an eminent and exceptional fate. Instinctively, I feel that Providence created her for great achievements or exemplary misfortunes.
If it happens that mediocrity marks her actions, I feel it as an absurd anomaly, attributable to the faults of the French, not to the genius of the nation. But also, the rational side of my mind convinces me that France is truly herself only in the first rank; that only vast undertakings can counterbalance the forces of division within her people; that our country, as it is, among others as they are, must, under the penalty of mortal danger, aim high and stand tall. In short, to my mind, France cannot be France without greatness."
