A man in his 80's in Spain was sentence to prison when two burglars broke in his house in the middle of the night and he shot one of them and he ended up dying. The old man who was protecting his wife and sister in law who was in the house got convicted of murder and sent to prison.

The same way you handle most of these issues: make them the government's problem. When it's the members of Parliament getting arrested, they'll take notice, and do something. It's just like with the surge in illegal immigration here; the smart thing to do isn't to bus them to New York, but to bus them to the Capitol building. Send another dozen even few days, and you'll have immigration reform bills being passed by the end of the month.

On the other hand, Spain is a country so screwed up that you can be arrested for domestic violence, tried and convicted, then walk because you legally (just legally, nothing medical required) change your gender to female, and the media will be upset because you got off, rather than because the laws specifically prevent women from being charged with that crime. Their situation may be hopeless at this point.

Yea, pathetic. I heard this from a friend in France..."you have a right to a gun, but if you use it, you go to jail". Why people think like this is beyond me. Consider European squatter rights as well... someone can move in or not pay rent, and difficult to remove them.

In essence the system is saying "you don't have a right to your stuff or your space". This why some people leave those countries for USA. Sadly, we are turning into the same.

I don't know the details of the story, but I've heard Spain's criminal justice system is a bit of a trainwreck. Like having separate laws for males. Hopefully it's not true, but if it is, imprisoning people for self defense would be par for the course.

The way to handle this is you go to your representative and talk about being able to protect yourself and family. If they don’t give you the answers you find out who will be running against him in the next election and talk to him. If you get the right answers then you do everything possible to get the information about the 2 politicians, there differences and why you think the one is better then the other. This of course will be a slow change, might take many election cycles to get anywhere with this approach.
Now the reality… someone breaks into your house and might do harm to your wife or child…. You don’t give a shit what happens later. You protect your wife and child with everything you have. to hell with politicians who want to protect criminals while jailing citizens who protected their family. Eventually everyone will get tired of this nonsense and it’ll become a big problem for these whacky politicians.

Near where I live a Hamas supporter sprinted across the busy street and jumped on a guy who was demonstrating form the return of Israeli hostages. The guy had a legally owned handgun and he shot the attacker.

Wouldn't you know that guy who was defending himself got arrested.

Spain has some of the strictest laws regarding gun ownership A Spaniard can own a gun, but only for hunting or target practice. To use it to shoot someone is illegal.

Whether we agree with that or not, that is the law in Spain.
