The violent crime rate has been fairly flat for the past 15 years, and overall declining for the past 35 years. Here's a simple graph using FBI data.

It is more due to the fact that the most violent cities no longer report murders and other violent crimes to the FBI who keeps these statistics. Actually violent crime has gone up during the last 4 years.
