The murder rate has plummeted to the lowest number since 1900. Is it a coincidence?

The NY Times cannot for the life of them explain that in 2025 we had the biggest drop in murders in history. Can anyone come up with a plausible explanation?

“There’s never one reason crime goes up or down.”  It's pretty safe to say that this is not because of trump's policies on crime. Other crime rates, such as drug-related crimes and assault on officers have risen. Sexual assault stayed the same. Cities that weren't affected by trump's illegal use of the NG show similar data. Denver, for instance, a massively blue city within a blue state, saw a 40% decrease. Little Rock Arkansas saw a 16% increase. Despite it being a blue city, it's located at the heart of a deep red state. If it is because of trump, it's probably because people feel united against a common enemy: trumpism. Certainly not because of his policies. A similar phenomenon happened in New York in the wake of 9/11

It's hard for me to imagine that they have. They're probably just not getting reported to the public anymore because they're are too many of them.

I have no idea why homicides have decreased. More legally concealed firearms and more public cameras may deter criminals.

There were 22,830 homicides in 2025. That's 4/100,000 (1960 levels), down from the historic peak of 10.2/100,000 in 1980 and 6.1/100/000 in 2021.
14,651 homicides were firearm related (a significant drop from 20,958 in 2021 during the covid lock downs). Both justified and unjustified homicides are included in that number.

At least gun control supporters can't claim that the drop is due to fewer guns and more restrictive gun control laws, since firearm ownership has not declined and concealed carry has become more common.

If I were the governor of a red state and Trump offered to bring in the national guard to help with crime, I would call the nearest carpet store and ask them how long their longest piece of red carpet is.

LMAO I was just waiting for the stupid's to say "Trump did that", so I could point out that the lowest murder rates of the last 40 years occurred during the Obama administration, from 2009 to 2016. Uh huh. LOL

I'm not screaming "causation" at all... it's just a statistic that's also unexplainable. But keep in mind, even though it's a low point for the past however many years, it's still not really low!!

We stopped using lead paint and lead in our gasoline. Violent crime has been consistently going down since 1992 with laws reforms with an exception of one year 2020. Global pandemic and economic disaster.

1) US is an old country Baby Boomers are old and dying Older people don't commit crimes.

2) What is murder is downgraded to other , gives politicians good stats and they keep same Chief of police and Sheriffs get reelected.

3) I would rather have freedom and some murder , than few murders and no freedom. Ben Franklin said when you give up freedom for safety , you deserve neither.

"Murder" may or may not be down. Manslaughter, "homicides", etc. may not follow the same trends as they are- technically- different.
