Because Katrina bankrupted disaster funds back in 2005 and Congress never replenished it and, to a large degree, that's not their fault as the natural disasters have been piling up with that "hoax" of climate change so they've been spending funds as fast as their appropriated. The ban on private assistance and the no-fly zone simply make sense when they're trying to coordinate their own attempts without Mavericks getting involved independently. I think they should try to find a role for volunteers with assets like that.

I'm just curious, when Katrina hit and devastated the South and Southeast in 2005, The aid and rescue efforts were appropriated immediately and it was almost unanimous for both appropriation bills.

When super storm Sandy hit the Northeast, particularly New York in New Jersey, 180 GOP representatives in the House voted against providing aid. Why do you think that is? Were you as animated and concerned then in 2012?

Its the government. Money is always going everywhere so that is not a surprise. That said, FEMA and other disaster relief programs has been on the GOP chopping block for ages so they are all barely functioning and underfunded now. Also I think the GOP is trying to put the house into recess or something so they can't resolve the FEMA situation before the election and make Biden look bad.

Since the house and senate controls the government finances that means that no new funding can be passed without GOP approval.

Regarding rescuers trying to help, you can do that if you cooperate with the authorities but if you try to do it by yourself you are more of a liability than a help. Its not uncommon for people trying to help to require assistance themselves and therefore waste resources or even get people killed. Private action simply does not work in a disaster this scale, you need to cooperate.

Many if not most of the hardest hit areas in eastern Tennessee, western North Carolina and northeastern Georgia are rural and conservative. Especially in North Carolina and Georgia Trump needs the votes from those areas to carry those states. When you don't have electricity, clean water and grocery stores that are open, and passable roads to get there, voting is going to be difficult. The Democrats --- including the Harris-Biden administration and the Harris campaign --- are well aware of that situation. The people who are hurting in those areas (and the disastrous conditions can't be overstated) are in many cases still missing family members as a result of the storm. Administering an election where the normal polling places are destroyed or under water is going to be very difficult.
But not to worry because Kamala Harris says everyone in the hard hit areas who applies will qualify for a $750 payment.

FEMA trying to maintain the control of their fictitious "aid" , continues to be weirdness of the nth degree.

I have worked on a tornado relief team through IDES (Noblesville, IN, a NE far-suburb of Indianapolis. As a Massage Therapist, I have to be CPR-certed- thankfully, didn't need to do that. I built rafters, assembled sheds, and did some cooking there. We were even allowed to bring our small dog (crated)- that is how things get done without the Feds getting in the way. We would get breakfast at a nearby sponsoring church made by volunteers, lunches "in the field" were donated by local restaurants that were NOT flattened by the tornado, and supper was again at the church by volunteers.

For further reading, GAGgers might want to look up the use of "Hey, Rube", a a rallying cry for unquestioned help when needed.

Apparently the remote locations that the private helicopters are helping with are normally republican. So if the democrats can isolate them until after the election. That will mean less republican voters!
