Where did this idea come from that women are more empathetic than men?

We are often deceived by the way women appear "kind" or sweet, and we think just because we see more women in fields like nursing, child care, retirement homes, etc. that it must be in their nature to show care and empathy. When the truth is most women show that to who they want, when they want, not as a general rule. And women often take jobs like the ones above because it's more woman-friendly for them and something a woman can start a good career in, but that doesn't always translate to them actually caring about patients. Many of them are actually irritated by them.

I just had a talk with a woman today about this very thing. She was annoyed that breast cancer gets so much more attention then testicular cancer. First off my GUESS is that breast cancer is more prevalent. But I told her women are probably much more likely to discuss their health then men are. So it gives the impression that women care more about others etc. Guys care just as much but by nature we're conditioned be stoic, to not intrude on others lives without being asked.
