Just a quick History lesson.
Abraham Lincoln, the 16th US President, issued the Emancipation Proclamation that freed slaves.
Lincoln was a Republican.
When you look at this snippet of history, why do Democrats believe that they are entitled to the Black vote?
Because they can actually read? The Emancipation Proclamation (https://www.archives.gov/exhibits/featured-documents/emancipation-proclamation/transcript.html ) freed slaves exclusively in Confederate territory, over which Lincoln held no sway; it explicitly did nothing for those in the North. It's the equivalent of Biden saying gun violence is too prevalent, and making an edict banning private handgun ownership in Calgary. The slaves were freed, and private slavery abolished, by the passage of the 13th Amendment, which Lincoln OPPOSED. The man's flagrant racism, while appalling today, was typical of the time; his concern was holding the country together, and he didn't give a damn about the slaves (he in fact expressed support for the Corwin Amendment, which would have enshrined slavery as an institution). He did push for it (and quite hard) after winning reelection, but that was over fears the Proclamation would be overturned as unconstitutional (which it DEFINITELY was); he feared for his political legacy.
Take a look at the memorials our other leaders have- many of them are inspired by ancient Greek architecture; that's not unique to Lincoln, but his alone depicts him on a throne. That's not a coincidence; the man was a would-be dictator, thwarted only by the political system set up to run slowly and inefficiently, and while it's hard to praise a murderer, Booth did us a great favor in taking him out. Of course, his doing so also cemented Lincoln's legacy as a hero, instead of the monster he really was.
But that's far enough off-topic; back to the 20th century. Yes, time didn't skip from 1860 to 2020; there were many, many years between them- including the years of the 1950's and 1960's, when many laws and jurisdictions, overwhelmingly Republican, refused to grant legal and social equality to black people, who are also mostly aware that 159 years weren't skipped. The Civil Rights movement of the time faced brutal backlash for making demands like "not being forced to give up your seat on a bus" and "not being subject to mob justice for a baseless accusation of sexual impropriety" (today, that's a Democrat thing through and through, but not back then!).
Then along came President Johnson (the second one), who enacted a complex scheme of welfare programs that incentivized the breakup of black families (five years earlier, their divorce rate had been slightly lower than that of white people), and who boasted that his efforts "would have those [racial slur]s voting Democratic for the next 200 years". So far, he hasn't been wrong.
There are still a fair number of people who saw the civil rights movement firsthand; we've long been out of former slaves.
Well, it’s important to remember a few things. And before I say them…no one should feel entitled to anybody’s vote, it should be earned. With that out of the way…. there was something of a flip-flop between the two parties in the mid-20th century, when Republican politicians like Richard Nixon and Barry Goldwater led “The Southern Strategy”, an appeal to Southern white voters using anti-African-American sentiment as part of the draw. By winning all of the South, taking away formerly Democratic voters, electorally they wouldn’t need much anywhere else to win the Presidency. The movement pushed the Republicans much further right. Without getting into too much history, Kennedy, LBJ, etc, steered a more progressive agenda based around the Civil Rights Movement. By the end of it all, a lot of Democrats were now Republicans, and Republicans were now Democrats.
Lincoln gets a lot of reverence in this country, so of course the Republicans want to claim him as their own. Hard to say how much they’d have agreed on. On the one hand, we always know that guy who says “you know, the Civil War was actually fought over states’ rights.” Yeah…in that case, they were PARTICULARLY fighting over states’ rights TO OWN SLAVES. So it was absolutely about slavery…BUT…Honest Abe was not on the side of states’ rights here, so maybe you’d say he’d align more with Democrats these days. It’s not as relevant to today’s labels, but I feel like it’s fair to say that, in 1860s terms, emancipation of slaves is more “liberal” than “conservative” in nature, party names aside.
On the other hand…. not to smash any idols, Lincoln wasn’t necessarily in the company of MLK. In an 1858 Senatorial debate vs Stephen A Douglas, Lincoln is quoted as saying: “I am not, nor ever have been, in favor of bringing about in any way the social and political equality of the white and black races—that I am not nor ever have been in favor of making voters or jurors of N*******, nor of qualifying them to hold office, nor to intermingling with white people.”
So I mean…. half-credit for the Emancipation Proclamation and all, but I wouldn’t necessarily put Lincoln on the pedestal most people put him on. He was pretty fucked up in his own right.
I think the notion Lincoln was "fucked up" by quoting in a way almost every politician thought in 1858.
It's a really weird thing people judge historical figures with 0 acknowledgement of perspective and the historical norms.
He fought a war to maintain the country in the worst domestic situation in US history BUT he said some bad words in 1858...
@bobby_bush_eater Yeah, I mean, I can apply some context to things. But certain stuff, like slavery….. there’s no time period that occurred in human existence where I’m like “you know…. we simply didn’t know then what we know now” and can accept that. Although it’s worth noting that Lincoln’s statement was in response to Douglas saying he sees no disparity between the races, so not everyone thought this way. People had it in them to NOT own slaves, but they chose to go against it, whether it was a social norm or not.
The character one would have to have to say “I’m going to own this fellow human being, make them do all the work I want to do for no pay, they’ll eat the refuse from what we eat, live in subhuman conditions, possibly be raped if they’re women, we’ll break their families apart without thinking twice about it to sell one or more of them to another ghoulish person, and all the while will claim to be devout Christians, escaping their own brand of slavery, The Anglican Church, because nothing could more important than their code of morals and values”….. that’s all just so low-character.
And that’s to say nothing of how they treated those pesky Native Americans who were occupying land they wanted to deploy their slaves to and start farming, lmfao.
The idea that our early settlers and our Founding Fathers of government were these great people with impeccable character is patently false. We want to celebrate that they founded our country (in a manner I’m not proud of at all), so we just whitewash all the bad shit. It’s INEXCUSABLE that I needed to get to college level history, AS A MAJOR, to learn these things. And in elementary school they’d pick one of us out of the class to put on a top hat and a fake beard and play him in a class play or something, as if this is someone we should aspire to be like. Thats simply WEIRD.
@bobby_bush_eater I just wish we taught HONEST history, not “Yayyyyyyy! Go America! U-S-A! U-S-A! U-S-A!” history. It’s not that I want anyone to hate America, nor do I think that would be the result. At some point, we’re all modern humans, none of us were there, so there’s no reason to point fingers at each other…. but it’s very important to have that nuance and context. Don’t just present historical figures as unassailable heroes, that’s deliberately miseducating us, and for what? A false sense of patriotism? Again…. really, really WEIRD motivation.
So I’m just not into giving free passes to flawed men. He was “the good guy” in the specific context of The Civil War, but also remember Black folks’ lives continued to suck for another hundred years before some other flawed white guy came along and decided they should be equal ON PAPER. The Civil War freed the slaves and kept the country intact, and all due credit from me for that, but it doesn’t necessarily mean all the statues and portraits and imagery of Abe Lincoln is well-earned. This country’s history is mostly steered by “what’s good for white people”, first and foremost.
@bobby_bush_eater We’ve really only recently started to move away from it, and it’s not exactly being welcomed with open arms by everyone. The brand of racism has evolved from “physically inferior” to “culturally inferior”, but it’s still definitely a thing. Way fewer crosses being burned, and that’s cool, but when I watch internet videos of a fight at a football game or something, the entire comment section is WAITING to identify a Black combatant, and then all I see are gorilla emojis, people mockingly saying “it’s they culture”, “13% of the population, X-% of the crime”, disparaging comments about absentee fathers, the “I’d like to solve the puzzle” joke from South Park which is just a way to say the N-word without saying it, etc, etc…. and then a similar video, same circumstances but white combatants, then the comments are way less voluminous in number, and the comments are at worst “what an idiot. Too many beers”, it doesn’t turn into some huge sociopolitical commentary. Racism is alive and well in America and the world in general, they just come up with safer ways to carry it out.
So I’m for teaching HONEST history. I don’t think kids will hear it and say “America sucks”, I think they’ll have a better understanding of where we are today, how we got here, and what we need to do to continue improving.
I think people forget almost all "Great men" in history have done horrible things. The USA was won by conquest, the methods are the details but the USA doesn't like acknowledging the fact that our origin was the conquest of white Europeans.
As for your slavery point, I still view that as putting a modern lens on it. Douglas obviously had a different perspective than Lincoln lol. What do you think Arabs thought of it 200 years ago never mind today? It's an unfortunate stain on many empires and great men but I think to judge figures in a perspective where you use personal moral absolute is more indicative of your perspective than historical relevancy.

There was 0 way to magically make black people's lives good, I am not sure what you expected Lincoln to do. You point out a lot of modern stuff when not really making historical points.
These lands were tribal before white Europeans came here and ended the tribal stage and brought governance and technology to benefit themselves. They flourished, fought, cheated, stole etc. but it's not unique in the slightest.
Find an empire or industrial powerhouse where this didn't happen historically?
@bobby_bush_eater Right, and therefore, I think we need to stop teaching these people to our children as “great men”, because literally one of the last principles I think kids should be programmed to believe is: “achievement is the ultimate goal, and how you get there, we’ll give you a pass as long as the result is impressive.” The achievements and impressive results are in no way a necessity. We could live like the year 600…. I don’t even know exactly what was happening in 600 AD lmao…but, super-unpopular opinion, we don’t NEED to live to be 90 and live the cushy modern life we know today. Living like cavemen is a perfectly acceptable human existence outcome. You and I would hate it, and we obviously aren’t all going to go feral and abandon modern society…. but we can never let the pursuit of achievement disrupt our moral compasses. There is no achievement so great that even one iota of decency and compassion should ever be sacrificed for.
Instead, we can simultaneously herald achievements AND say “but make no mistake…. this guy was an All-Pro piece of shit, so don’t go following in his footsteps.” Humans seem to hate that kind of non-binary thinking, but we have to remain committed to it, for most things.

Slavery, genocide, misogyny, racism, colonialism…. these are just a few things I can’t really accept that a human soul was unable to grasp that they were doing traumatic harm to another human soul just because “it was a different time.”
“Seeing pain/sadness/fear in another human’s eyes as you inhumanely violate them in some way” didn’t just recently get invented. All these “great men”, and a lot of just “average everyday men” from certain places and/or time periods knew full well that what they were doing or perpetuating was wrong. They just justified it as a necessary means to a non-negotiable end, or simply abused their own power in society against the less powerful. It really is THAT simple.
I get that there’s a degree of “ok, we all agree that sucks, but here we are, centuries later”, and that’s fine, but I think the stain of that should remain visible for all to see, just so we all maintain proper perspective on how we’ve gotten to where we are, and how many of those things have trickled down to still influence us to this day. We can’t let our appreciation for the good things eclipse the often-many BAD things. We’ll be better, more well-rounded humans for it.
This is important stuff here, we’re not debating if Dick Butkus would’ve been as dominant of a Linebacker in the modern NFL. And we’re not talking “it was a different time” like people worshipping the sun or believing the Earth was flat, again, this is just about treatment of a fellow human being, which I can’t for the life of me imagine basic human emotion operated differently then. These are moral make-up determining conversations.
@bobby_bush_eater I have many qualms with the way some people have operated in the past and some who still operate in indecent ways. I hold all humans and cultural groups to these standards, just with an appropriate amount of nuance and appreciation for psychological trauma they may have likely experienced leading to poor manifestations. But if you’re doing wrong, you’re doing wrong. America is the topic here, but it extends worldwide.

@bobby_bush_eater “Fostering and advancing Western Civilization” can’t be an inalienable goal with no guardrails, that can’t be the governing destination point of life where we throw principle to the wind because nothing could be more important. Like we could stop technological progress RIGHT HERE, in October 2024, and be totally fine FOREVER. We could roll it back 20-30 years, even, and live GREAT. What do you mean entitled to the Black vote? Don't Republicans also try to sway all kinds of people to vote for them? Democrats and Republicans both do that, to all voters, not just to Black voters. And--it doesn't matter what party Abraham Lincoln belonged to. He was Republican, but the Republican Party of that era was not the same as the Republican Party as it stands today. Today Trump is their leader, and many of them look up to him. He is also not well liked by many of them, who say he is unfit to run for office--many of those who once voted for him. Not anymore!!
He is someone who denied people of color to rent at the apartment complexes that he owned in Queens. He is friendly with White National Groups, the Proud Boys, and the Klu Klux Klan admires him (he may admire them too for all I know). He makes fun of Kamala Harris in saying that one day she is Indian, another day she is Black. It doesn't matter what color or nationality you are--it's what you believe in and how fairly you will treat EVERYONE if you are running for president. Party does not matter, as long as fairness and integrity are part of you. Trump does not have integrity.
Could it be that it's because that was hundreds of years ago and time moves on and things change? Nowadays the right seems to promote itself as the party of racists and bigots, is it any wonder the black folk aren't flocking to the right. Turkeys don't vote for Christmas.

Quick history lesson. There was a shift in membership and party ideology which meant that the identify of the Democratic and Republican parties switched sides.
Republicans of old used to be in favor of things such as expanding federal power and the federal government. Today they are the party of "small government" and "states rights".

The government wanted people in the south to man military bases to deal with the treat of communism in Latin American, so Republican moved south to military bases. This is why most military men are Republicans, and most of them come from the South. Republicans moved south to build road and to work in factories that build good in a post ware economy. These were non union jobs and Democrats were union laborers. That's why to this day, Florida for example is a right to work state meaning that if a union strikes, everyone pretty much just keeps working. It's part of the Cold War. This is the real American history. You'd know it if you went through a basic public school upto grade 12.

Government wanted defense industry factories in the south after the war, so again they passed bills for it. Government wanted non union factories in the south to rebuild Europe so they passed bills for it. The government wanted jobs to be done, and Republicans wanted jobs after returning from war so they moved from the Rust Belt to the Sun Belt to acquire those jobs. Republicans get government spending, because Republicans moved to where the government was spending. The Democrats were the ones that spent money in the South. They wanted to give government money to the KKK run south, but the Republicans moved in and overwhelmed their numbers because the Republicans wanted to work, make money, and raise a family. You've got it backwards dipshit.
The same thing is happening today right in front of your face, but you are too stupid to see it. As Democrats locked down their economies and said we're not doing anything, give us stimulus checks, universal basic income, and reparations Republicans worked tirelessly to boost the economy and as a result Florida's GDP has gone up 160% since Obama left office and Trump was elected. This has attracted 2 million new residents making Florida the third largest state. Florida, which was a swing state up until 2016 went solid red state due to massive migration of Republicans from states like New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, California, and so on. Conversely blue states economies have slumped as corporations have moved operatives south and population losses have been documented. It's funny that you can't see it. You know what comes next? More government spending for an American Iron Dome which will be built in Florida, and that will drive more American Republicans south to Florida for good jobs. I know the Truth hurts, but I'm sure you'll get your wepawations and student loan forgiveness some day... Meanwhile Florida will be growing economically and developing.

And no, federal money is not going to red states because they are the most productive. Of the 10 most productive states in USA, only 3 are red. On the flip side, the 10 most states dependent on federal assistance are 7 red states and 3 blue states.
I would also not put farming and productivity in the same paragraph if I was you. Farming is one of the least efficient production methods we have, but thats just helpful advice.
Another way to look at your whole federal spending history lesson is that Republicans wanted to use federal money to benefit themselves and their friends so they funneled money in the guise of investments into their states and their pockets. Farming and the defense industry are notorious for their corruption and bribery.
But yeah, you have not made a convincing argument for why Republicans moving south would mean a Democratic majority in the north. Your theory simply does not work.

Just to emphasize that point even more. That source that was given comes from The Johns Hopkins University Press Reviews in American History which is a quarterly peer-reviewed academic journal. Johns Hopkins University is a top 10 university for American history and is located in a blue state. So even the academic Democrats in your neck of the woods say I'm right, and you are wrong. @phraseology As I have been saying, you are contradicting yourself. If Republicans were more productive, and the south experienced a manufacturing boom, then the Republican south should be more productive than the Democrat north. But if we look at which states are the most productive its dominated by Democratic states where as Republican states are struggling and requiring an endless stream of welfare to prop up its lagging society and industry.
And again, you have not made any credible claims for why Republicans would move south and not Democrats which would be significant enough to flip all the northern states blue. And no, the military deployments and such will not be enough to explain it by any means.

Any rational, consciousness person can research all of the high black inner city areas of the country and research the living conditions and qualify of life, crime in cities that have had democratic leaderships for decades, democrat mayors, attorney generals, police chiefs, often black leaders and find out how awful they are and much rot, crime, drugs, prostitution, failing schools exist but then poll a lot of them.

If you have time read this and you'll see how of you took the Republican party's value in 1860s and side by side them with today's you'll notice a big difference.

A hundred years after Lincoln's party freed the slaves, the democrats, in more recent times signed the civil rights movement. That said none of this means any party says they're entitled to anyone's vote.

The R's strategy is a simple 2 pronged attack:

Lyndon Banes Johnson, who fought vociferously against the Civil Rights bill in the Senate, saw the writing on the wall and signed it when it passed Congress and he was the President. He explained that it would have them voting Democrat for the next 100 years. Since it hasn't been 100 years yet; the party still feels entitled to their vote. The Republican party for some odd reason decided to rest on their laruals of championing the bill into law and moved onto other issues. And so the myth of the great party flip began. The parties didn't flip their values; the Democrats just took credit for all the work the Republicans did on civil rights and the Republicans didn't bother correcting them on it. It also didn't help that they got Richard Nixon elected; who unwittingly took the backroom dealings of Washington insiders and brought it out to the forefront of American consciousness.
The Republican of almost 200 years ago isn't the same ones as today as political parties have changed.
Nevertheless, the democrats feel entitled to the black vote because blacks collective have been giving them around 80% plus their support for decades so they got used it.
I believe I read somewhere that an advisor to LBJ, a very racist president, that if he signed the Civil Rights act of 1964, the Dems would have the black vote for a generation. It turned out to be several generations.

There was a time when the Democrats were actually the party of the people. I'd say that formally and officially changed during the Clinton Administration, but you could argue that the LBJ years got the ball rolling.
President Johnson started the "war on poverty" back in the 60s which expanded welfare benefits and creating a whole underclass of voters. Most of them are black. I imagine that this was done on purpose so there would be a large voting bloc that will vote Democrat. When Trump was president he created opportunity for black voters instead of just a welfare check. This resulted in many shifting their voting habits.
Republicans and Democrats were different back then. And he might have freed them but he didn't want them in the country. His original plan was to deport them to Central America. But I doubt most black people know that, so I'm gonna go with the former. Though I agree that Obama and Biden haven't done shit for the black community and neither will Kamala

Oh goodness, not surprised you need a history lesson. Look at an electoral map before civil rights. The south were Democrats before the 60's. They were the slave owners. Then the parties switched. Conservatives are Republicans now. They were Democrats then. You don't get credit for freeing slaves. You can't reach lower than your FEMA lying but you're sure trying.
