I'm voting for Trump for a number of different reasons. But most importantly because I feel the Democrats don't really care about handling inflation rates and because they think we're stupid enough to believe that just because Harris isn't Biden she'll be any different, when she was a key part of the administration and still defends many of its policies.

Respectfully, miss…. U. S. inflation is at it’s lowest, 2.4%, since pre-pandemic levels. Had the pandemic never happened, the estimated inflation rate for this same time passage would be right around that number. In short…. inflation is exactly where it should be, and has been GREATLY reduced under Biden’s administration, which isn’t necessarily a CREDIT, Presidents don’t control economics anywhere near as much as most people seem to think they do, things more just “happen” at random and we credit/blame whoever happens to be in charge.

And independent of the inflation rate is the cost of goods and services…independent in the sense that costs CAN go up with inflation, but have no requirement to return to the old prices because of a REDUCTION in the inflation rate.

Also important to remember that any rapid DE-inflation is VERY bad for an economy and can drive recessionary trends, as people see prices beginning to drop, and start predicting FURTHER drops and holding off on purchases, waiting for a better price, generally reducing cash flow to businesses, and all the chain reaction that results from businesses having less cash to play with. Trust me on this, I studied it in college😜

How much credit you choose to give to Biden or not (and none of either should go to Harris, VPs aren’t making policy decisions, they’re doing ceremonial shit and waiting for death or serious illness to befall the President), that’s whatever, but don’t believe the vague narrative of “Democrats bad, Republicans good” when it comes to the economy. Numbers I don’t have it in me right now to dig up, but I know exist, strongly suggest otherwise.

You can’t believe the Republican/Trump-generated tropes about the American economy. I’m a few classes short of an official “economist” title, but I’m not just talking out of my ass here, I promise. And I come from a finance family, WE DO THIS SHIT, lmao. Money and economics is what we know. And I’m begging you, with tears in my eyes, don’t believe the hype. And as far as Trump, I’m not the first guy to break this news, but his tariff plan is so half-baked, I can’t believe it’s being proposed in seriousness as a remedy. Tariffs will encourage domestic production and procurement of materials, and that’s all well and fine, I’m totally in support of keeping jobs in America. But that’s not why he’s doing it. He’s doing it to generate revenue to replace money lost from tax cuts —some for the middle class, but MOSTLY for the 1%— and what he doesn’t seem to understand is…. well, he just doesn’t seem to understand how tariffs work, lmao.

The tariff is paid by American companies. If I’m a construction company in America, and I need steel to build a skyscraper, then I need to find a steel source. I can go to some company from Pittsburgh, but the steel will cost, let’s say, $100 per foot (no idea what the going rate of steel is right now, just round number). I call a company in Beijing, and they say they can sell it to me for $50/foot, because they don’t pay their employees jack shit, meanwhile the Pittsburgh company is paying fair wages, probably pushed by labor union pressure. With the international shipping costs, maybe that Chinese steel comes in at a total cost of $80/foot, still beating the Pittsburgh bid. Thats how we lose business to China.

BUT…a tariff of an additional $20/foot of steel makes it even, or in some circumstances, MORE expensive than domestic. The hope is we just buy from Pittsburgh, and keep the business in-house.

Depending on the exact numbers, though, the Chinese steel might still come a little cheaper, and the construction company will still buy Chinese steel, but the tariff is paid by the American construction company, not the Chinese steel company. And you’ll never believe this, but the construction company isn’t just going to eat that cost. That cost gets built into the bill for the developer who hired the construction company to build the building. (Or the person buying a car, or shopping for groceries, depending on the nature of tariff/affected goods). China doesn’t get hurt AT ALL, not in the short term.

Also, America may not have the steel production capabilities currently to accommodate the increased supply chain needs if we start dealing in only U. S. steel, which will slow business down. Construction companies will have to tell people that they’ll need to wait a year or two to just OBTAIN the steel to start a job.

So now you’re back to outsourcing to China, and the cycle continues, our costs are still high, and China is laughing all the way to the bank, suffering no losses.

That’s a long way of saying: Trump doesn’t have a clue about any of this, he just assumes voters don’t have a clue either, so he just says what he thinks sounds good. I even saw FoxNews’ Trump-loving Maria Bartaromo (also a trained economist) pressing Trump on this, saying “But your tariffs would CAUSE more inflation, by rule”, and Trump literally just goes “no, it won’t”, because laws of economics don’t apply if Trump doesn’t want them to🤦‍♂️😂

Anyway…. just wanted to put that out there. You can take it or leave it, but I assure you I’m not lying, and this IS, in fact, how economics “work.”😊 Tariffs are NOT an answer to inflation, and mostly leads to MORE inflation.
