Because it's unconstitutional. The whole premise of "voting" is that you are not retaliated against for how you vote. The register was there to ensure the state can produce enough ballots for the eligible to vote in each household.

Voting machines kick that to the kerb, so the register is there to identify how many are eligible to vote.

There is no evidence of "illegals" voting. Most of those cases have either been overturned on appeal, or were just false allegations.

No, people should have to identify themselves to protect against voter fraud which is indeed happening all the time. Voter fraud is not at 0%, you cannot claim that.

People should have to bring two forms of ID and there should be a specialized ID for voting. Voting should be on the same day, balance should be hand counted and everything should be done on paper with no machinery.

That sounds like nonsense. Ballots are anonymous. You are registered at a certain ballot station because that's where your local politician is based and because that's where you live and because you get one vote. You show id to make sure you are the person registered to vote so no one else votes in your place.

Because requiring photo ID discourages voting at all, and Republicans believe that the fewer the number of people that vote the better their chances of winning.

Also, the photo ID requirement is just an excuse to make people come to the polls in person, and this is something that poor people differentially have trouble arranging and paying for - and poor people differentially vote for Democrats, since Republicans have historically abused and mistreated them.

Republicans have a vested interest in preventing poor people from voting and a photo ID requirement is a good way to do that.

@dongie I acknowledged that in my opinion, viz "... a greater percentage of minorities don't have government-issued IDs..." I grew up in New York State and voted there. They didn't use IDs, instead they compared your signature to one in the official book. If they matched, you got to vote. If they didn't, there was a discussion and you had to prove who you were in order to vote; people usually used their driver's license for that. Key point is that a voter needs some way of proving who they are. ID's are the easiest way to do that, but not the only way.
