Why do some Americans oppose the voter id laws?

I'm from Europe, and here it's a no-brainer that both left-wing and right-wing supports. You need to show an id, before you can vote.

I do not really see a reason why one would oppose voter id laws, unless he/she really wants to forge the election.

It's more agregues then face value. They are looking at political leanings first and foremost and retroactively putting barriers for political rivals. This also effects homeless people without proper addresses. People who have fallen in the cracks of society who need representatives to get help.

It can also go down to having 10 polling places in rich areas vs 2 in poor areas. Even split up distracts where a new pollination is from at the last minute so every from the same area can't re-register in time.

Yes having photo ID is easier but not having ID dosen't stop the government from getting our taxes or throwing people in jail or summing me to jury duty. Also state government is independent from federal.

so that is just a piece of plastic to the federal government. Federal government only recognizes the ssn dosen't give a fuck what you look like.

I need an ID to buy cough medicine, including Dayquil. ID is needed to buy alcohol, cigarettes, cash a check, have a bank account, travel by plane, get into some concert venues, and to have a job.

I don't see why there is a push against a voter ID. Basically, anyone (m or f) can show up and use my name to vote.

Now they can even send in a mail-in ballot and apparently the left doesn't think a signature should be required. That's especially alarming since the blank mail-in ballots are delivered by mail to voters. Our mail gets mixed up with our neighbors' all the time.

The issue isn't the ID, it's the type they want to require. Also people will try to invalidate you for almost asinine reasons. This one girl didn't change her registered address when the street name changed. She had to go to court and lay gor a lawyer to get back on the register after changing the street name. Apparently just updating the street name wasn't enough.

You have national ID. We don't. Passport is voluntary purchase. If we had any sense (we don't) we would make passport our national ID. I'm liberal and I support this idea.

I go to university in a different city, but can still only vote in a district my parent's house is in. I know it well

While voter ID is fine but I dislike when some is stopped from voting when their ID is expired or has a slightly different name from the ID. It's not the voters fault. Just use ID number to confirm if the are same on voter list vs their own 🆔.

Because such laws in reality have the effect of disenfranchising minority group members, and they also discourage many people from voting at all, which are goals of the Republican Party here in the US.

I suppose any country that is substantially multi-racial and a history of slavery, has in-person voting requirements, and a very hostile and threatening right wing that keeps lying about supposed election fraud by non-white people. If you have all that in the same place that would do it. It sure does it in the US.

Because some people live and work in the USA and don’t have a drivers license or own a home. They still pay taxes and should be a part of the voting system.

It is allowed for non-citizens to vote in local elections only in very few municipalities across the country. It's obvious that the question is regarding the federal elections, as the scale of the other one is miniscule.
