It's signature verification for each NEW YORK election I've voted in. There's gotta be 2 dozen of mine at least in that poll book and when presented to voter (me) to sign the current election it's presented backwards & upside down so good luck trying to forge reproduce my signature by just a glance if you're impersonating me (by the way ALL voter fraud by impersonation were done by MAGAs and amount to.00000006% of all votes tallyed. I can solve the voter ID problem right now anyway. Every citizen gets a FREE 1st passport on 18th birthday. Must be STAMPED at least ONCE in the next (and every) decade to be eligible for renewal. If you can't pay for renewal then it's FREE again until you pay or it's deducted out of your income tax filing. If no tax owed from years 18-67 then it all gets taken out of 1st social security check.

Two problems solved. Only verified citizens with picture ID vote AND it forces insular, arrogant, ignorant USA AMERICANS to travel internationally once a decade and maybe learn something. You're welcome.

Passports are a big deal with background checks and scanning any hint of dangers. If any country questions usa for everyone by default getting a passport could turn it away seeing it as valuable as monopoly game monopoly.

Long run would be disaster for doctor without borders. National security. Red cross support. Trade.

As much as voting is a fundamental right it shouldn't be compromised by international governments opinions.

Maybe if the usps system could handle just an independent voter photo ID and registration. But we know voter suppression is a thing and will change something every 4 years so why give them an inch as they want miles.

It wasn't required at the dawn of the republic (before photography), so why should it be now? You didn't even have to be a citizen to vote.

When I lived in NY, the way they did it was compared signatures with the last time you voted.

Now I live in Missouri where you need ID and, worse, if you do an absentee ballot, you have to get your ballot notarized (by a notary public - not always easy to get access to) before you send it off. (The notary public stamps the envelope and verifies you are you.)

All you guys need is a rigorous electoral roll with checks on citizenship at registration and checks on multiple voting post election with appropriate punishments for that offence.

It is problematic to allow enrollment for non-citizens and should not be possible. It does work to auto enroll if a person obtains citizenship and when they turn 18. My country does that. It is pretty secure against non-citizens voting. State and Federal rolls are coordinated.

The worse case is if I move I can vote in an electorate or state I shouldn't be if I don't notify of my change of address.

In my experiences. You damn near need an ID to use the restroom.
You can’t do any banking without ID. Need an ID to see a doctor. Need ID to sign up for unemployment, retirement, sick benefits etc. So what is so bad about showing ID to vote.
There are ID’s cards available at the Driver’s license centers. If people would take these non drivers to get their picture taken. Problems solved!

@DrPepper12 I grew up in NY. Over time, my actual signature changed, so it didn't match the one in the big book. Fortunately, the election inspector was my next door neighbor, and she knew who I was.

Mine has changed as well. You can see the evolution. They're trained to ask for a driver's license that has the signature on it now and the driver's license will date when the signature was last used. They even caution that you should not do some hurried squibble like you do at the supermarket checkout. The poll workers are very well trained and give good advice. I've never had a problem
