"Liberal" tag is too ambiguous, I'm not sure what liberals really are on the political board, I'm not even sure what you, specifically, mean with liberal so... I'm going with a simpler and straightforward tag instead: Leftist, or far-leftist, in my case.
I believed in absolute free speech when I was a young leftist. It had some idealistic appeal to me, liberty to say all, it was captivating. As time passed though, I gradually lost respect in the idea of absolute freedom, because I identified that the speeches wanting freedom were using a similar pattern. The pattern was anti-conformism, which sounded great at the beginning, but then it became freedom to be racialist, freedom to be revisionist, freedom to be creationist, freedom to say... Everything that contradicts collective knowledge. By people self-attributing legitimacy, just because they wanted. The worst came years after, when I saw the same kind of people contaminating others, joining forces thanks to internet, determined and unaware they're destroying what has been built by the collective, for the collective, which is what I believe in.
At this point now, when I see people buying the very concept of "alternative truth", then I see the definitive fall of the spirit of freedom. So, no freedom of speech from me anymore. It has become destruction instead of creation it was supposed to be.
Classical liberals, yes. Neoliberals, no. Especially in Europe where speech crimes are strictly enforced. In the UK, they charge thousands of people every year with speech crimes. I'm in California and it's somewhat common to charge people for speech crimes, but nothing like Europe.
You would have to define Freedom of Speech. But for the sake of the simple answer yes.
The complex answer is, I don't think Freedom of Speech means you can make threats and harass folk. Some others think that is Freedom of Speech. I don't think you can walk into a public place and shout 'I've got a bomb.' if you do I think the cops should be able to shoot you dead right there.
However If you want to say leaders who are known to be dictators and did horrible things are nice then that should be allowed.
I'm liberal and I agree in freedom of speech with the exceptions where it is illegal like screaming fire in a theatre. Why ask a silly question with options like this? Some people don't like hearing other people's opinions. Conservatives can at times (not all) be extremely similar in that they don't believe in others exercising their freedoms.
This happens on both sides. There is no you're forced to listen to anyone exercise their free speech. I think that's what is happening now. Neither side tries hard enough to hear each other out. One side is definitely more apt to reject logic and facts from any experts. So that makes it difficult.
Yes. I voted for Harris and you won't be hearing me crying that it was rigged. What I am going to be is disappointed in my neighbors, friends and family that voted for a rapist, racist , and convicted felon. That disappointment won't overtake me because despite my disappointment, I still love my friends and family, and I'll hope for better days. I don't think Trump is good for the US or the world but I hope I'm wrong. I don't want him to fail. You're a lot younger than me so it's your future more than it is mine. I wish you well despite who you voted for if you're American as well. If you're from outside our country, I also wish you well and to stay safe.
Yes, of course liberals believe in free speech. They care about liberty and freedom.
Oh wait, you don't mean that kind of liberal you mean the leftist/socialist types. Those don't care about free speech at all.
I am a liberal of the real kind, you seem to like my posts so that's something haha. Real liberals want as much individual liberty as possible but still believe a government is needed to in my case wield against corporations who otherwise become controlling monopolies. So real liberals are more towards libertarians. Real liberals like me can still be capitalist, nationalist, etc. All it means is that they highly value individual rights and liberties instead of thinking that its better to have top down control.
Now liberals were generally really liked because of this, socialists and communists not so much so those know they would be better off identifying as liberals. And for some reason the right wing never called them out on it. They don't care about free speech, gun rights, right to own property, etc. They do not care about liberty. They care about society with redistribution of wealth, abortions, LGBT, racial division with equity, etc. Its completely different.
I refuse to surrender a term that defines me to people hijacking the term so I always speak out against it. Now in US terms its the conservatives who actually conserve liberty, most modern conservatives are real liberals who abandoned the term. I just refuse to identify as conservative since that would imply I wouldn't want even more liberty for the individuals as things used to be.
I have no political tags
but I do believe in full bodies of law... and more so when it is about freedoms and freedomsand when does a freedom becomes an abuse and excess of liberties...
Lmao gag is blocking images. It's funny.
Liberals love freedom of speech. Leftists only like freedom of speech when it agrees with them, everything else is fascism, racism, and literally Hitler.
And I'm saying this as a classical liberal. Leftists have stolen the name..
What part of my comment is not being nice? Seriously? I didn't insult anyone. I didn't put anyone down. All I did was call out the difference between liberals and leftists. Honestly what are you smoking?
Not really. I told the truth. Most of us real liberals voted Trump even. Real liberals have more in common with conservatives right now than they do with leftists.
Me too. I'm glad my wife voted the same. She's the conservative between the two of us.
Agreed
It's actually a core belief of liberalism. The problem is you keep calling socialist liberals. Socialists don't believe in free speech. Stop calling a duck an orange and start calling it a duck.
Nah you just have never studied Liberalism. If you had, you know the Constitution of the United States is based on Liberalism. As an American Conservative, you try to Conserve Classical Liberalism. Social Liberalism arose in 1971 as America was in the height of the Cold War with the USSR. It is Socialism disguised under the pseudonym "Social Liberalism". You can see the Social as in Socialism right there in the title. The intent of the communists is to smear Liberalism, which is the core belief of America, so that average Americans see Liberalism as a dirty word, even though Liberalism gave rise to the Constitution of the United States. If people think Liberalism is a dirty word, they will not study it and as a result will become disconnected from the root of their ideology. It's psychological warfare.
Depends what you mean by "freedom of speech".
Usually you mean "freedom of my speech, but not yours"
I believe in freedom from censorship by the government. Social media sites get to choose what they will allow.
They used to. Now that they dominate virtually all institutions, they donβt.
Hmmm am I sensing a bit of bias on your multiple choice question? 😂
Only when it is Their Truth.
You need to distinguish traditional liberals from "progressives" who think their POV is the only one that should be heard.
Yes, but I'm a classical liberal. We're all about free speech!
Unbiased survey. I like that.
Try constructing your poll options in a manner allowing people yyou disagree with to answer, asuming you want reasonable and accurate results. I doubt that you do.
only when it's not spreding fake news and non-sens ideas.
Yeah, subject to the physical safety of others
yes, just as long as is not against them
What's a Liberal?
I don't think I'm a liberal, I'm right wing
What's a militant?
Just looked it up , I'm not a militant
You don't even know Me, can't call me a militant not a fair judgment of me
Tell me why I am?
I come across a militant or racist but I'm not , I'm just scared about the future of our country, it's bad now very frightening , scared were gna lose our identity
How was your birthday? Tell me all :) welcome to the 33s club :D
The second option made me laugh
Sure do.
But like everything it has limits.
They donβt.
They do not
Promoting Genocide, Defamation, coercion, counseling someone to commit a crime, uttering death threats, threatening to kill the president, conspiring with someone to commit a crime, communicating with a minor for sexual purposes, perjury (lying under oath), making a knowingly false accusation against someone, communicating with known terrorist groups
All the above are not considered within the bounds of free speech
I agree with you. However you have to admit that the things I have listed have been used as a free speech argument. So therefore like everything free speech has limitations in law.
